Outstanding English Lesson Hook - iPhone Character Message

Outstanding English Lesson Hook - iPhone Character Message

Get the children’s imaginations flowing with this text message generator. This PowerPoint allows you to edit text messages as if they had come from anyone. It may be a message from the Gingerbread man or the 3 little pigs. The first slide acts as if the screen isn’t in use. The next pretends to bring up ‘your iPhone’ with the message from the chosen person. When you click (works best with a clicker) the slide will look like your replying. Clicking again saying “send” will send your preprepared message. Give it 4 seconds and your character will reply without you having to press anything. (Remember to type in your reply, it doesn’t generate that part). Then repeat the process again to have a conversation as long as you want. It even has real text noises! A genuinely excellent resource that has so much flexibility. This is an excellent resource! Always thought of creating something like this. Please review and let me know what you used it for! Mr H

Online Safety : Internet Addiction 2018 (E-Safety Assembly)

Online Safety : Internet Addiction 2018 (E-Safety Assembly)

Designed for Safer Internet Day 2018. The theme is online / technology addiction. Certainly a problem and topical issue in many schools. This presentation focuses on our growing dependency of smartphones, and the negative effects it can have. I found the topic to be thought provoking and a different angle on the usual risks / dangers resources we often use. This resources is a 15 minute Presentation, well suited for KS3/ KS4 assemblies and tutor activities. I’ve added guidance and question prompts to the slide notes throughout. This resource has been designed to be engaging, detailed and easy to follow. The resources are fully editable (so easy to adapt for your school). The video linked is not a purchasable resource, I do not own the copyright for this. It is freely viewable through YouTube. If time is available in your assembly / tutorial then I would recommend showing. “At Nationwide our members have a voice. While we think technology and the online world are amazing, they shouldn’t become the way we do everything. In this poem, ‘Face to Face’, SugarJ Poet explains it better than we ever could.”

Social Media Curriculum - KS3

Social Media Curriculum - KS3

A bespoke curriculum for KS3 on the topic Social Media. The unit contains 4 lesson plans (each lesson available in 15 minute, 30 minute or 60 minute format). Each lesson begins with a short 3-5 minute film to engage in the topic and then explores a range of questions and discussion points, encouraging students to develop critical thinking and empathy skills. Lessons contain a range of multi-media resources to support learning ideas and contain clear instructions to guide through the lesson. Lessons have been designed to complement SMSC learning objectives and match core National Curriculum PSHE specifications in value-based learning. Focused on tolerance, respect and global citizenship, lessons allow students to explore their own opinions and values, make connections to those around them and practice listening and empathic engagement. QUESTIONS EXPLORED • How has social media changed the way we interact with each other? • Are we becoming more or less social as technology allows us to make friends all over the world? • Is technological connection allowing us to feel more connected? • What is the ‘filter bubble’ and how is it affecting our understanding of the world? • Are ‘fake news’ and algorithmic conditioning something that we can prevent? • Is social media a tool that we can learn to use rather than depend upon? AIMS AND OBJECTIVES Each lesson starts with a short film which serves as the platform for the lesson’s discussions, allowing students to engage firstly with the ideas raised in the film and then develop insight and engagement in the topic. Students will practise skills of critical thinking & questioning, deep listening and empathy building. Lessons will explore the pros and cons of global connectivity through social media, examining the human and environmental impact of this growing technology. Students will examine the changing nature of connection in a modern world, learning to question and engage in a range of connections that we are forming through our use of social media. Watch a short video introduction to the unit here:

They Walk Amongst Us

They Walk Amongst Us

After the horrific events in Parkland Florida I am encouraging everyone to download this FREE resource that explains why we have to take a tougher stance when disciplining children and stop soft peddling when it comes down to consequences. Political correctness needs to be looked at closely in relationship to students and adults who because of their digital footprint have proven that they are a danger to society.

Personality Test: What Do You See First and What It Says About You (fun starter!)

Personality Test: What Do You See First and What It Says About You (fun starter!)

Really fun starter the students love! The following is a personality test to see what kind of person you are. Psychologists have found numerous pointers as to what kind of person one is, from just things we take for granted. For instance, observing a picture for a short period is enough to know what kind of personality one has. Are you optimistic, creative or just stable. This personality test is not scientific, and its main purpose is simply to have fun.
