World Cup KS3 Maths starters and a World Cup lesson KS3

World Cup KS3 Maths starters and a World Cup lesson KS3

Here are two flipcharts one is a selection of starter type activities, the other is a lesson looking at types of numbers and statistics focussing on averages. Even if you use notebook you should be able to import these files. Most of the resources are created by myself though some have come from other freely available recourses online, Thank you for sharing and I hope you don’t mind me having used them here.

Vary and Twist: Simplifying Ratio

Vary and Twist: Simplifying Ratio

An attempt at some variation theory This one was hard. I spent ages rearranging questions and looking at what should be added. Specifically, I had a massive dilemma when it came to introducing fractions. I was trying to point out the ways in which simplifying fractions and simplifying ratio were similar, but I’m not sure that I haven’t just led students down the wrong path thinking they’re equivalent. For instance 5 : 6 is 5/11 and 6/11, not 5/6. Hmmmm. The variations I used for section A. An example where you can use a prime divisor The opposite way around. What happens to our answer. Order is important! Half one side. 8 : 5 becomes 4 : 5 One that’s already as simple as possible. Time for some questioning? How do you know you can’t simplify it? It’s not just reducing the numbers down. Here you have to multiply up. Deals with what simple is. I have changed this from the picture to make only one number vary from the previous question. Needs a non prime divisor. This isn’t really a variation, though. It has nothing really to do with the previous questions! Again, double one side Double both. Our answer does not double! Adding a third part of the ratio. Changes the answer significantly. Doubling two parts here. Our parts don’t double in our answer! If you amend this and it works better, please let me know.

World Cup Maths Week

World Cup Maths Week

A week of maths that I have planned to run alongside the world cup. It is aimed at year 5 but could easily be adapted to suit others. It covers a range of curriculum areas such as addition, rounding, interpreting timetables etc. I have included all of the images, resources etc that I used to allow for it to be edited. The resource doesn’t upload in the present folders so the order is as follows Day 1 - Day one task and team sheet with wages Day 2 - Question one, question two and question three Day 3 - Question sheet Day 4 - Stadium overview Day 5 - Table of players SMART presentation begins each day Images aren’t required for the lessons. I have included them in case you wanted to adapt, change or completely redo the planning.

Numeracy Ninjas Skills Focus: Ratio

Numeracy Ninjas Skills Focus: Ratio

Following in the spirit of the excellent Numeracy Ninjas by William Emeny (available on TES Resources or at www.numeracyninjas.org), here are some daily intervention skills focus sheets on Ratio which I am trialling with my classes. These are available free for you to use but please respect the copyright of Numeracy Ninjas name and logo. I would really appreciate your feedback on these as I’m trying to get more of these ready. Any fine-tuning you can suggest would be a great help. In my filenaming system KS4B does not mean Key Stage 4 set B. KS means key skills and 4B means sheet number 4 in set B - the original Numeracy Ninjas intervention being set A. There are 6 pages in file. The first three pages are the student activity, the last 3 pages are the answers.

Recipe Ratios

Recipe Ratios

This took me a lot longer to make than you might think. Some ratio questions aimed at Foundation GCSE or possibly lower, based on two recipes. I copied the recipes off the internet so if I’ve infringed on your copyright let me know and I’ll take it down. Or you could just grow up and learn to share couldn’t you.

Go and Find - Recipe Proportion Revision Activity

Go and Find - Recipe Proportion Revision Activity

Another ‘Go and Find’ activity. Some of the questions are pretty difficult, best for a middle-high ability class. Give each pair of pupils an answer sheet, and they have to ‘collect’ tabs of paper from around the classroom, each with an answer on them. There aren’t enough answers for every pair to get one each, so they are competing against eachother. They lose points for incorrect answers, and there are a few red herrings to catch misconceptions. Takes a bit of set up but well worth it! Answers, pupil instructions and example of pupil work included. Can be adapted for different abilities, just be sure to change the answers on the excel document.

Sharing by a Ratio using Singapore Bar Visual Method Worksheet Bundle AND ANSWERS

Sharing by a Ratio using Singapore Bar Visual Method Worksheet Bundle AND ANSWERS

Really useful set of FIVE worksheets with accompanying SMART Notebook files (and PDF copies if you don’t have Notebook) and scans of ANSWERS to save you time using the Visual Singapore Bar Method for sharing by a ratio. Also included are two Helpsheets which can be printed out and stuck into the student exercise books to a) save them copying and b) to give them worked examples to look back at. The SMART Notebooks (or PDF’s) can be displayed on your Interactive Whiteboard to allow the teacher (or a student!) to work through examples in front of the class. The five worksheets are roughly progressive from easier numbers to harder. An example of a question is share £12 in the ratio 1:3. The worksheet gives a scaffolded frame for the student to use to work through the steps to share £12 into £3: £9 using a bar method. Sheet 5 is quite good as a final assessment of whether they have got it. You could use the five sheets over several lessons or use them all in one lesson but issue the harder sheets to your better students. When you print the worksheets out for the students then you can print 2 pages per A4 to save costs. If it is a 1 page worksheet then print pages “1,1” on one sheet of A4. The eventual aim is that the students can use this method without scaffolding. There are plenty of exercises available elsewhere once they’ve got this method. See BONUS “Helpsheet Fred” for example of this. The answers are simply scans of my scribbled solutions - however they do the job! The resource follows on from my “Really simple ratio introduction activity” If you like this and find it useful then please leave me some positive feedback and do check out my TES Resources shop which includes many premium resources which may help save you time and give you ideas.
