Fallas is the biggest celebration in Valencia, happening in March. At this time of the year, it is clever making students educate you about the topic. This is a good introductory activity to start the conversation going.
The Fallas Bingo is supposed to reveal how much they are involved in this Valencian festival.
How to play:
You have to files. If you want to use the material digitally, then use the whole page where you see one bingo sheet.
If you prefer using printed material, then choose the pdf, where there are 4 identical bingo cards on one page, so you’ll need a pair of scissors to cut it up.
Students mark every statement that is true about themselves. If someone has four in a line (horizontally, vertically, or maybe even diagonally), they shout bingo. Wait until most of the students have a bing. Then ask a couple of them to read which statements got them a bingo and encourage them to discuss them. Why? When?
Of course, you can play the Fallas Bingo in many different ways. In another version, students must work in pairs, form questions based on the statements, and mark their partner’s answers. Or the whole class can get up and walk around and students ask different classmates the questions.
It is recommended for teenagers and adults, from about B1/ pre-intermediate level.

A booklet which includes individual readings describing each of the following festivals in Spain:
Las torres humanas, el Colacho, Las fiestas de San Fermín, Las fiestas de Moros y Cristianos, Las Fallas, El Día de los Muertos en México, La Tomatina.
Students can work through each text and at the end, there is a summary activity. Here the student completes a grid in Spanish which summarizes the key points of each festival, the aim of which is to help them prepare for their writing and speaking exams. Key words are also provided with each reading to support students.
I have also recently added two other revision resources which I used with my students recently to do further revision on this topic: A vocabulary / translation revision sheet for higher and foundation students. These sheets are focused on some of the key cultural differences between Spain and the UK which the students can use in their speaking / writing exams. They also focus on popular festivals in the UK i.e. Christmas and Glastonbury should students wish to discuss these in their speaking / writing.
I have also included a power point which I have used with my students to practice their speaking on this topic. There is a match-up activity to start - whereby the students match the festival to the region, a photo activity structured on AQA photo exam (this photo is focused on holidays / regions - so it’s best if you’ve covered this already), a role play - AQA exam based (focused on festivals) and a slide with general questions to help students prepare for general conversation based on the topic of festivals / regions.
This IMPRESSIVE worksheet deals with the topic of FESTIVALS at GCSE. Feria de Abril, Dia de Muertos, Tomatina and Fallas. -Lesson designed mainly for KS4 students
-4 main festivals explained (Las Fallas, San Fermín, El Colacho, Los Castells)
-Student lead-activities to improve cultural knowledge and language skills
-GCSE exam revision on the topic
-Answers to the activities are included in the PPT
Two PP that will make your students learn about the main tipical Spanish festivities such as la feria de abril, las fallas, la tomatina… every festivity has a link that will drive you to a more detailed Youtube video.
Cultural lesson about my hometown’s big celebration: Las fallas, includes clips, a song and lots of explanations in Spanish about this popular Celebration declared Patrimonio Inmaterial de la Humanidad in 2017.
It goes well with the AS/ALevels Spanish AQA topic “El Patrimonio Nacional”.
It is also a very good powerpoint if you want to do a cultural lesson with KS3 or KS4 students, however the texts are in TL and would need some translation.
I have a KS3 version of the presentation created, please, ask if interested :).
I hope you enjoy such a colourful display!
Paula
PD: I have attached a video about Spanish festivities as a starter , so the file might be a bit heavy, however it also has the videos embeded in the ppt notes.
This bundle includes a collection of eight lessons created for few international celebrations such as Christmas and Easter as well as some traditional Spanish Festivals (e.g. Las Fallas, San Fermin, La Tomatina). I have tried to use some videos and games to make it more engaging whilst still providing students with some grammar / AQA GCSE exam practice. I also included the cultural starters I used as well as a template of my drill for teaching students how to answer AQA GCSE Reading parts A and B based on the text about Aste Nagusia, a Basque festival.
