Paper lanterns are great for developing fine motor skills such as: folding, coloring, painting, gluing, cutting, listening and following directions. Embedded within this Earth Day project there are several activities to extend your students learning about the Earth. These units are designed in a Mix and Match format. You are able to pick the pieces that you want, depending on the needs and the abilities of your students…so many possibilities. There are many ways to create these World lanterns using glitter, paper layering, leaves, shredded paper, tissue paper or garbage collected from around the playground. This unit can be approached in several ways. Either as a quick Earth Day project that will take about 90 minutes to complete. Or as long, in-depth project that will take upwards of a week to complete. In my classroom, creating the basic lantern will take my kiddos about 90 minutes (coloring and assembly). Adding on each Heart will take an additional 45 to 60 minute block of time. I normally read an Earth storybook for my Kiddos. We create one heart for each Earth related book, writing and drawing one element that is important. I use this Earth Day project as the center piece for my Environmental Education for Earth Day. Looking After Our Planet (Earth Day resource)- EYFS PSHE lesson. A detailed, fully resourced PSHE lesson suitable for EYFS/Reception age children. This lesson has been designed for use with children in Reception, however, the PowerPoint and activities could be adapted for use with other age groups. In this lesson, the children will learn about the things they can do to take better care of the world around us. This lesson serves as a light introduction to environmentalism, which discusses practical, age-appropriate ways that young children can start to take care of the natural world.
