A collection of excerpts from Schemes of Work for Mathematics I wrote for for children with severe learning difficulties. These are aimed at children working roughly within the P Levels P4-P8 range. The SoW aim to provide key learning objectives and starting points for teaching activities for some of the strands in the Mathematics Framework. They may also be suitable for children in the Foundation Stage - although as they were designed specifically for children with severe learning difficulties you may find some of the activities too structured and not play-based or exploratory enough...

The story of the Gruffalo. Useful for whole class reading.

Many teachers love the Talk for Writing approach but do not find it easy to organise all of Pie’s brilliant ideas into a unit of work. It is a challenge! I have been following the TfW approach for many years, and I have spoken at a few of Pie’s national conferences. Over the years, I have organised Pie’s ideas into a three week planning grid. The planning frame attached is not supposed to be prescriptive; it is designed to ‘hold your hand’ while you put a unit together. It is invaluable for teachers new to this approach, but even old-timers like me find the prompts helpful. This planner has been taken on in many schools and you may adapt it for your own use. This work is designed to support teachers using the TfW approach.

The handbook includes background information for teachers about common spelling patterns, useful strategies, including mnemonics, and spelling and phonic games. Many of the ideas resources have been posted elsewhere - acknowledged at end.

7 sets of cards in JP order. There are decodable words with matching pictures. If you cut them up and laminate them they would be suitable for independent work, for a small group working with an adult, or for your whole class phonics.

I've made these as I couldn&'t find what I wanted! Cursive letters with sound buttons underneath. On the other side the corresponding pictures. The big picture links to RWI&';s ditties for letter formation, and in a smaller box I've added the picture of the Jolly Phonics action. When I was completing my National Professional Qualification for Senior Leadership, I found a lack of high-quality examples of things like a Business case or a Risk Management plan to be a real source of concern. There are some online and through TES but they are all charged. I resolved to share my complete NPQSL project for free once I knew it was successful. I am pleased to say I scored 27/28 on the project, and so have shared it complete with assessor feedback so that people can see why I lost the mark and why I scored well. All pupil data and staff codes are anomynised so as to protect identities. Hope it helps!

A silly little story but my class loved it and it helped to highlight and address some misconceptions. Can be used as an intro or in a plenary to look at doubles and halves.

A power point version of the story - our 3/4yr olds loved it. Not made by me, it came off one of the grids for learning so obviously it is free for all to use.

A re-telling of the traditional tale. 'One day, the farmer planted a turnip seed...The sun shone and the rain fell, and under the ground the little seed began to grow...It grew...and it grew...and it GREW!'

This might be useful in this format as it gives equal space for dating evidence. I have separated ELGs as I would want to use them. Let me know what you think and compare to my other grid. I will enlarge to A3 for each child as type is very small.

'The Gruffalo' and 'The Gruffalo's Child' story-sequencing activities.

I plan to show this powerpoint on the IWB and use it with children who need to move from just writing cvc words to being able to write short sentences. Ideal for groups working with individual whiteboards. you could also print off the pages that show the complete sentence, laminate those pages, cut off the writing and use for matching sentences with pictures.

This resource provides a range of activities to develop fine motor skills, designed with learners with severe learning difficulties in mind. It is by no means exhaustive, but covers a range of activities to develop discrimination of left and right, hand-eye coordination, crossing the mid-line, in-hand strength, finger and in-hand manipulations, finger isolation skills, grasps, releases, pencil control skills, early drawing skills and early letter formation skills.

I've been searching everywhere for a set of regular 2D shapes with their properties also listed. I couldn't find them anywhere so have created some simple posters. I thought someone else might find these useful!
