A ready to use lesson (from KS3 upwards) to meet the PSHE/SRE Statutory Curriculum. Editable Powerpoint with 60 minutes worth of material.
Learning Intentions:
 I can identify key facts about abortion and the law
 I can differentiate between pro-life and pro-choice arguments
 I can write advise and offer solutions to a problem-based scenario

The lesson allows students to discuss the controversial issue of abortion in a controlled and mature manner. The lesson begins with a silent debate whereby students have to vote on different scenarios regarding autonomy before the topic of abortion is introduced. For example ‘women should be allowed to vote, drive, drink alcohol’ Students are then given information regarding the procedure of abortion and are introduced to Pro-Choice and Por-Life arguments, which they have to sort and then are challenged to directly match up to teach how to counter arguments. Students are also tasked with a writing to advise task whereby they have to apply correctly their knowledge to offer advice and solutions through a problem-based scenario. This can be used as a piece of summative assessment. The lesson also include advice and for students, signposting source of support.

The Lesson includes:
 PowerPoint -9 slides
 Resources- Silent Debate Sheets (12 pages using Publisher), Pro-choice and Pro-Life sorting cards (uses Word), Abortion Information sheet (uses Word)

PowerPoint and resources are in comic sans, with size 14 font and slides have a yellow background to ensure that it is SEN inclusive. The lesson includes differentiated learning tasks that challenge students to be critical thinkers. The lesson includes assessment for learning opportunities and develops wider literacy skills.
The PowerPoint has teacher notes with suggested teaching ideas and questioning, as well as suggested timings. The Lesson and resources are non-specialist friendly.
Tried and tested lesson used by both specialist and non-specialist staff across inner city schools in the Northwest.
