This is a comprehensive literacy unit, aligned with the Common Core Standards. Included are graphic organizers that help students apply their background knowledge to learn about two friends, Frog and Toad, and record their character traits and character comparisons. Students will also think about the author’s messages, sequence events, identify story elements in fiction and parts of speech, write poetry and a Reader’s Theater script in partners. In addition, there is a math component, sorting and describing by characteristics or attributes. Last, but not least, there are two formative assessments, Making a Diorama depicting the reader’s favorite chapter and writing an Acrostic Poem about friends. In the last part of this unit, students will learn to write “thick” questions, desiring to learn about the real differences between frogs and toads. There are many informative texts young children can read about frogs and toads. I bought enough informative texts called Frog and Toads by Bobbie Kalman and Tammy Everts for partners to read together. The photographs are detailed, and the text is excellent. Using this book, along with some graphic organizers, students can enrich their knowledge about frogs and toads. As another formative assessment, students can use “non-fiction features” to write their own brochure or magazine about frogs and toads. Students will recall and synthesize information they have read to write information boxes in their own words, and other non-fiction features magazines use.
