Heart of a Samurai Historical Fiction Literary Guide
One of my favorite things to do in English class is to bring the reading of Historical Fiction to life! I've done it with . . .

Now, in honor of a visiting Author in April, Margi Preus, Wake Up Sunshine is bringing her epic Historical Fiction novel, The Heart of a Samurai to life. This engaging, thought-provoking, and affordable literary guide is filled to the brim with creative ideas to motivate and encourage your students or child and improve their reading comprehension ability. The guide also includes thought-provoking quizzes and creative interactive notebook activities courtesy of my wife from Beach House!

I've even just added a musical score I've written, along with lyrics for the students to sing along to; along with discussion questions for the lyrics. While I'm by no means a professional musician, I'm proud of my little song ♥

In summary, Manjiro, a fourteen-year-old, along with four friends become stranded on a remote island after encountering a powerful storm at sea, in 1841. Since their countries borders are closed, they know attempting to return to Japan is futile. Unfortunately, it’s all they know. What lies beyond the island is nothing but danger: devils, horrific monsters, and violent men . . . or so they’ve been told.

In time, an American vessel approaches the island and takes the
boys aboard. What lies ahead is a culture shock as to what the world
entails outside of Japan’s borders.
