Purpose: A KWL charts is a useful instructional and research tool. As a comprehension strategy it is an effective student entered way to activate background knowledge prior to reading or learning.
Useful in addressing the following Common Core Standards;
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL;3.1, 4.1
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.3.1, 4.1
(Broadly useful in meeting many of the common core standards at different levels)
Overview: Before engaging in reading or learning the students list their prior knowledge (K) of the topic. Next they list the things they need or want to know (W) to complete the learning task. The third is completed actively as the student reads or is engaged in learning (L).
