Purpose: To help students understand how language changes depending on who we are speaking to. Students learn how to communicate respectfully with adults without feeling that their own social vocabulary is “wrong.”

Learning intention: Students will recognise when informal peer language is appropriate and practise choosing formal, respectful alternatives when speaking to adults/teachers.

Students can:

  • Identify peer-to-peer informal phrases.
  • Explain why some phrases are inappropriate when addressing adults.
  • Convert informal expressions into respectful alternatives.
  • Use sentence stems to speak politely and confidently.
