Write & Interpret Numerical Expressions – Playlist and Teaching Notes

In this playlist, students explore standard 5.OA.A.2. They will use parentheses, brackets, or braces in numerical expressions, and evaluate expressions with those symbols. Students interpret numerical expressions by writing them in sentences. They will write numerical expressions that show calculations. Students look at examples of expressions and are guided through using order of operations to evaluate expressions. Students also have the option to view instructional videos and complete practice quizzes or activities.

The playlist includes:
• 3 links to instructional videos or texts
• 3 links to practice quizzes or activities
• Definitions of key terms, such as numerical expression and calculations
• Examples of how to solve an expression using order of operations

Accompanying Teaching Notes include:
• A review of key terminology
• Links to additional practice quizzes or activities on certain parts of the standard, such as evaluating numerical expressions
• Links to video tutorials for students struggling with certain parts of the standard, such as representing verbal descriptions of calculations
