Year 7 Handball Concept Curriculum Plan

This unit follows the two underlying principles of developing students conceptual understanding in Physical education; Uncovering and Transfer. The Essential Understandings and Benchmarks within this Unit have been created to be transferable across the subject area. However, this unit demonstrates how these can be applied through Handball.

This unit plan, provides an overview of how to incorporate the Conceptual Understandings of:

  • How how to develop, refine and improve the quality and range of their skills
  • How to apply appropriate tactics, strategies and compositional ideas

The Essential Understandings covered within this unit are:

  • Students understand how to replicate sport specific skills in dynamic situations
  • Students understand that skills are something that need to be learnt
  • Students understand where an object should be placed in an area of play
  • Students understand where a player should go in an area of play (attack)
  • Students understand where a player should go in an area of play (defence)
  • Students understand when to execute a skill within a game
  • Students understand how much force to apply on an object for height, control and distance

The Benchmarks that will allow the students to demonstrate the essential understandings are:

  • Students can perform basic skills in isolated practices and can begin to replicate these skills in game situations
  • Students can identify the cognitive, associative and autonomous stage of learning
  • Students understand where to place an object
  • Students can be in an appropriate position to receive the ball
  • Students can be in an appropriate position to close down play
  • Students can execute a skill with appropriate timing
  • Students can apply force when executing a skill
