Peer Assessment, final product or model

Peer Assessment, final product or model

Description: This is a simple peer assessment task that allows KS3 pupils to assess a peer's final product or model that they have produced. It prompts them to identify something that has been done well, whilst also highlighting an area to target for improvement. Objective: Encourage pupils to create a balanced, critical view when evaluating a product. By promoting the evaluation of someone else's work, they are able to look at the product objectively without bias, particularly if the product they evalaute is not that of the person they sit next to. Assessment: It can be used to inform AoL and formally documented by a teacher, or used more readily in session by a teacher who can then recall common targets for improvement, discussing with Q&A how these could be achieved. Prior Knowledge: The criteria of the project, which will have been set by the classroom teacher or discussed in the form of a specification possibly. Expectations: Pupils should begin to create a balanced, structured argument about products in general. They should use their K&U along with their experiences to identify and set appropriate targets for themselves and their peers. Hints: These can be folded, hole punched and, with some string, tied to the product. To save on labour, the kids can do this, and it creates a simple kinaesthetic element to the evaluation. Another way to do this is to print them, cut them out and glue them together. Laminate them and the pupils can then complete them with water-based markers, which can easily be wiped off. This is more time-consuming, but saves time in the lesson and saves materials in the long run

SCAMPER Wall Posters

SCAMPER Wall Posters

In collaboration with my ACCESS FM Wall Posters, I created a set of SCAMPER Wall Posters in order to assist my pupils with understanding the design process. It can be difficult for some pupils to unlock their creative imagination when it comes to developing a new product. Some will say they can't do it because it is too hard to think, and the challenge can shut them down.SCAMPER is a brainstorming technique that can help your pupils come up with a new idea, purpose, process, people, roles, positions, products, and much more.

'Rapid Progress' Class Activity by @TeacherToolkit

'Rapid Progress' Class Activity by @TeacherToolkit

This can be modified to suit any subject and topic. I do NOT claim this resource to be a new idea; just a strategy that works very well in the classroom that is worth sharing. This idea is perfect for sharing success criteria; and also demonstrating progress over a number of lessons. The topic can be used as a starter or plenary and feed into a main activity - using the same process - for students applying success criteria for classwork; coursework and exams over and over again. Supported with a blog-post weblink.

Contrasting shades - Optical illusion

Contrasting shades - Optical illusion

A really effective demonstration of how contrasting colours can help to make objects stand out from backgrounds and other colours. Could be used to help explain the importance of thick and thin line techniques in Design and Technology or in Art or simply as an optical illusion. The slide show simply starts off with the two circles positioned on either side of the screen, one on the dark shade and the other on the light. The circles have been timed to move next to each other demonstrating they are actually the same colour. The children I have shown this to can't actually believe they are the same colour, they are convinced the slide show changes the colour of the circles as they move....it is that effective.

An introduction to structures

An introduction to structures

This is a perfect small project for Design and Technology in KS1 and KS2. It introduces the topic of Structures. The project will give the children the opportunity to follow instructions to make and test a paper aeroplane (our best dart designs fly up to around 10m) and some simple beams to show how the properties of paper can change with some simple folds. Use whatever you have as the weight, I borrowed 1kg weights from Science; a flat piece of card took 300g but as soon as I corrugated it, it took over 4kg! The children got very excited. If the children are really keen and enjoy the project, you could always extend it to make bridges and towers from either art straws, spaghetti or rolled up or folded paper.
