Stating Your Case for the World's Greatest Sportsperson!

Stating Your Case for the World's Greatest Sportsperson!

In this engaging and interactive lesson, students make the case for who they feel is the greatest sportsperson of all time. Within the lesson they develop skills of: persuasive writing, independent researching, personal and social comprehension, and speaking and listening. By the end of the lesson, students write and present their own case for the world's greatest sportsperson, using individually researched subject matter, structural advice, and understanding of persuasive techniques. The learning follows a logical, bitesize journey, in which students: - Discuss and define the key features of what they think makes a sportsperson 'great'; - Research how their own contender meets the features of greatness, using a well-scaffolded research template; - Understand and exemplify each of the persuasive techniques, useful in convincing others of their case; - Critically analyse the language, subject matter, and structure of a model example of a World's Greatest Sportsperson article; - Write, present, and assess their own article. Included is everything that you need to teach, including: - Comprehensive, well-presented whole-lesson PowerPoint (students are led through the learning journey by an animated Usain Bolt character!); - Research template and completed model example; - Persuasive device cards for the card-sorting activity; - Model example of a completed 'World's Greatest Sportsperson' article; - Lesson plan. This would be perfect as a part of an English persuasive writing or speaking and listening unit, a PSHE/Citizenship study of people and their achievements, or a Cross-Curricular activity for less structured learning time. All images are licensed for commercial use, and are cited on the final slide of the presentation.

Methods of Training LP

Methods of Training LP

Practical Lesson Plan for methods of training. This is one of my favourite lessons to teach, use lots of enthusiasm and energy to encourage students participation and hard work throughout. There will be instruction cards to go with this lesson posted later, these will be free to download and are great to use in each of the clock faces. (would have uploaded as a bundle however the cards are stored on my USB at work).

a set of resource cards linking cricket and children's rights for primary schools

a set of resource cards linking cricket and children's rights for primary schools

We are pleased to share that a newly created classroom based resource that uses cricket to support learning and promote awareness of the rights of children around the world has been developed. The resource is centred around six themes which relate aspects of the curriculum with children’s rights and provide a direct link to cricket-led activities. This new, and completely free resource has been created by Unicef in collaboration with the ICC, the ECB, Chance to Shine, and the Youth Sport Trust.

PE Poster: Physical Education...We're Kind of a Big Deal

PE Poster: Physical Education...We're Kind of a Big Deal

P.E. IS A BIG DEAL!!! We are PHYSICAL EDUCATION teachers and we are PROUD to be teaching in a field that we LOVE! We understand the many benefits that our students receive from a quality physical education program. WE ARE A BIG DEAL!!! Physical education encourages physical activity for life, provides an outlet for creativity and self-expression, develops cooperation and teamwork, builds self-confidence, provides opportunities for personal goal-setting, increases personal fitness and motor skill development, helps reduce stress & anxiety, strengthens relationships with others and boosts academic learning! This poster was developed as a FUN physical education ENTRY VISUAL that gets straight to the point. This poster was designed to be placed on or above a gym door to let others know (in a fun way) that we are PROUD of who we are and PROUD of what we teach!

PE Poster: Physical Education...not Gym Class

PE Poster: Physical Education...not Gym Class

WE TEACH PHYSICAL EDUCATION!!! We are PHYSICAL EDUCATION teachers and we are PROUD to teach Physical Education! Most of us have the luxury to teach in a large playing area we refer to as the “GYM” but we certainly do not teach “GYM” despite what we sometimes hear from our classroom colleagues, administrators, parents, students and from the general public! The term “Gym Class” brings up a negative vibe and it is important that we make an effort to change how we are addressed to bring our field the respect that it deserves. Our discipline is truly holistic as we are one of the few subjects that can reach the “whole child”. We truly have a tremendous effect on our students'’ cognitive, affective and psychomotor learning ability. This poster was developed as a response to a PE Central Facebook post by Stacy Furness in which she wrote about how frustrated she was with how her solid PE program was being devalued by others in her building. She, like others in our field, are tired of being “looked down upon” and thought of as the “babysitters” located in the gym for others to use in the building. This disrespect begins when others use the term “Gym Class” rather than Physical Education, PhysEd or PE. This poster was designed to be placed on or above a gym door to let others know WHO we are and WHAT we do in a brief but POWERFUL way! I put the poster out for review and found that individual PE teachers have different situations (some without gyms) and also found that some prefer a DIRECT wording approach while others prefer a more INDIRECT one. For that reason, I created 4 versions (with 2 backgrounds for each version) of the poster, to accommodate these style and situational differences.

Spinney Hill Primary School - P.E and School Sport Philosophy

Spinney Hill Primary School - P.E and School Sport Philosophy

This is our school sport philosophy I think it helps when deciding what you actually want to achieve as a school and what sort of outcomes you want from P.E. For me it's all about experience, participation and enjoyment. We use the "School games" values to help implement our philosophy. Hope it helps you to write your own School Sport Philosophy. Thanks, Jim.
