Sport Idioms

Sport Idioms

Sport related idioms. Let students guess and figure out the meaning, before give them the definition - then they have to use the idiom to make sentences. Where the origin of the idiom is not obvious, I put it in brackets. This can be done as a game or competition. Enjoy!

KS3 Reading: My Family and Other Animals

KS3 Reading: My Family and Other Animals

An entire, lesson by lesson SOW with guided reading questions, games, activities and assessments. Although this is reading, there are lots of writing assessments woven in so that students see how the disciplines support each other. I hope it inspires some of your students the way mine have taken to it!I used the pdf of the book which is available online for some of my weaker students and also watched the television series. The resource as a whole was excellent for my G&T students who really enjoyed the family's eccentric lifestyles and saw more than a bit of their own lives paralleled despite the historical context. There are lots of opportunities for cross-curricular learning with Geography and History, so speak to your fellow teachers and see if you can cover it at the same time as they are teaching about WW2, post-colonisation, Greece, coastlines, or Globalisation. Please rate and review it if you enjoy it :)

My Family and Other Animals part 4

My Family and Other Animals part 4

These lessons focus on finding information about characters from chapter 3 and a reading comprehension assessing their reading abilities. The PowerPoint has at least two lessons: one on reading the chapter and a comprehension test and the second gets the students to write to describe a person they know well in the style of Gerald Durrell. There are a range of words covered to support learners of all abilities.

My Family and Other Animals part 5

My Family and Other Animals part 5

Two PowerPoints here which guide the readers through chapters 4 and 5 of Durrell's autobiographical account of living in Corfu. There is a focus on learning new vocabulary through games and using new words in sentences as well as activities to be done after reading the suggested pages. The second powerpoint consolidates some of the prior learning on understanding characters, helping students progress by making links between quotations and giving their overall impressions of characters. The games require the vocabulary used in previous lessons, or students could make them themselves!Differentiated for levels 2 - 6.

My Family and Other Animals part 6

My Family and Other Animals part 6

These lessons cover guided reading of chapters 7 and 8 from part 2 of Gerald Durrell's My Family and Other Animals, an autobiographical account of his family's time in Corfu. They guide the students' reading of extracts from the chapters as well as analysing the language features used by Durrell so evocatively. There are a range of games, questions and activities to keep all abilities of students interested and making rapid progress. There is a grammatical focus on the uses and purposes of punctuation and (for my higher ability students) how it can be used to create humour. The punctuation cards used were downloaded for free online or students could make their own, of course.A pdf copy of the book can be found online and sections photocopied so your departmental budget won't be too onerously affected. Enjoy!
