EdExcel Introduction to hazards (data, multiple choice and celebrity hazards!)

This lesson is an introduction to the hazardous earth module to classify, define and describe patterns of hazards over time. Students have to identify the clues given by the celebrities that initially identify the hazard followed by the type and if possible the event. There is also a starter activity that identifies the different hazard types and extends understanding so students are aware of the difference between hazard and a disaster. Students have the opportunity to complete a variety of tasks on the task sheet that is structured in the same style as the GCSE examination paper with the multiple choice and then a data task. There is also an extended activity to demonstrate challenge and embed learning.

Planning - Natural Disasters/Hazards

Lesson plans aimed at year 6 children (can be adapted to suit younger KS2 children) on Natural Disasters/Hazards. This unit of work was created to support children’s understanding of Earthquakes, Volcanoes and Hurricanes. Many activities are hands on and have cross curricular themes running through them. Children will be able to act out a hurricane talk show, create a volcano from basic materials, design posters and information pages for staying safe, and engage in group and whole class activities. There are 5 lesson plans within this, as well as the accompanying activities needed. No presentations attached. I hope this helps with your planning.

At the end of this Scavenger hunt students will be able to learn about the science of plate tectonics with different theories, types of boundaries and effects of it on earth along with its vocabulary. Its a great tool to review any subject units. Colorful and neat images on cards will create a deep interest among kids to perform the game with great visualization. Task cards are a great alternative to worksheets. They allow students for random movement in the classroom, which brain research shows increases achievement!
