Wallace And Gromit: Say Cheese! Revision/Cover Lesson

Wallace And Gromit: Say Cheese! Revision/Cover Lesson

This is a one hour lesson designed as a revision task for KS3 students. It includes a powerpoint, audio examples, a starter, differentiated objectives and worksheets for students to complete. The content covers reading sheet music, and basic revision on the notes of the treble clef and basic rhythm symbols. There are extension tasks that cover ledger lines, dotted notes, rests and tied notes in more detail for more able students. The secondary task can be either a performance (solo or duet) task, or a sequencing/composition tasks intended for use of software such as Garageband. The theme tune for Wallace and Gromit is split into a melody and harmony line to input or play at the learner’s level. This is very good for independent learning, but I am also confident in using it as a cover lesson too. The plenary includes a thumbs up/down activity and saying “cheese” for the differentiated selfie-obsessed generation.

Awesome Rhythm: Everything is Awesome Scheme of Work and Resources

Awesome Rhythm: Everything is Awesome Scheme of Work and Resources

Are you sick of tee-ta-tea-tea-ing your way around rhythm? Do KS3 students STILL NOT UNDERSTAND rhythm symbols? Need to bridge the gap between practical and music technology? This scheme of work is for you. I’ve designed a scheme of work for a KS3 class who have been introduced to the names of rhythm symbols and the idea that they have duration, but need some revision and a modern approach to learning it. This scheme of work lasts a half term (five lessons minimum) and covers revision of rhythm symbols (Semibreve, Minim, Crotchet, Quaver, Rests, Ties and Dots) in a fun way relating to lego. It also covers an introduction into music technology (I have used Garageband but this can be easily tranferred to Cubase or Sibelius etc), texture, and the idea of melody, counter melody and harmony. It can be a fun independent learning project or used for ensemble performances too. The scheme of work ends with a simple assessment with a grid for teachers to comment on expected progress and a feedback form. There is mastery style tick sheet also. There are three extension tasks attached to lessons 2, 3 and 4. Note: I have actually done lesson one with physical lego bricks and it has gone down a treat! No more issues there! I have embedded audio files into the powerpoint but we all know how that can go so I’ve attached that here for reentering too. There is also a copy of every Garageband file for displaying on the board or editing how you like.

Creating an EDM track online

Creating an EDM track online

This is a comprehensive 6 week course for Key Stage 3 in which they will: Recognise and describe EDM (Electronic Dance Music) Use an online DAW (Soundtrap) to create a track of music (sequencing loops) Use MIDI a device correctly Upload their track online to share it with others in their year for constructive comments The extensive PowerPoint covers every aspect of these aims and guides the class through each required stage. Having developed and run this course a couple of times I can honestly say that students have really connected with and enjoyed these 6 lessons. It has served me particularly well during the final term when the focus and attention of some students in KS3 is lacking…! Perfect for the end of term. If you do not have access to MIDI devices you can still run the course! You can use the keyboard provided with Soundtrap. Everything has been embedded into the PowerPoint (videos and mp3). However, in case any links are broken I have included all required videos and mp3s.

Write a class song!

Write a class song!

This is a 6 week topic that aims to give the children an understanding of the song writing process. This topic is designed to give the children the opportunity to write a song, from scratch, as a class over a six week process. It will help them to develop a good understanding of the process of writing a song, the “musical ingredients” (elements) that are needed and an appreciation of the time and skill that goes into writing a song. The children will develop an understanding of how to structure a song, creating verses, a chorus and the opportunity to compose a bridge/middle 8 as well. You do not necessarily have to be musical to do this but obviously some knowledge would help. It’s a great project for you to use for children who currently play an instrument as well, especially if you have been learning one via the wider opps/first access projects. Instruments can be easily incorporated into the topic. The topic also included opportunities for children to rap and beat box if they are not too keen on singing! The first 1-3 lessons will be spent on writing some verses and a chorus. This will be followed by adding simple accompaniment using class percussion (tuned and untuned) and other instruments your class/children may have been learning how to play. The songs will be kept in C Major/A Minor (Using the common chords C, F, G & Am). This is perfect for their vocal range and for accompanying instruments. Instrumental parts could also be added in between the verses and choruses. By the end of the topic the class with have a complete song that they can record and perform to other years and their parents. Links to curriculum/Possible assessment opportunities: Use the voice expressively and creatively by singing songs and speaking chants and rhymes Play tuned and untuned instruments musically Listen with concentration and understanding to a range of high-quality live and recorded music Experiment with, create, select and combine sounds using the inter-related dimensions of music Please note: I have used the font AR CHRISTY so you may have to edit some of the slides/fonts.

The Elements

The Elements

This is a 6 week topic that aims to teach the main elements of music: Pitch, Tempo, Timbre, Dynamic, Duration, Texture and Rhythm. This is done through listening to music (from Queen to Beethoven), composing songs, moving to sounds and music and creating music compositions using tuned and untuned instruments. Every lesson will focus on an element and explore its importance in music. Tuned and untuned percussion will be used in every lesson to help with this. The children will be given opportunities to improvise and create their own music and sounds. Standard notation will be used to help children develop an understanding of music/rhythm reading. Songs/chants will also be sung to accompany the lessons, developing their singing voices every week. An opportunity for the children to write their own class song will also be used to develop their singing and compositional skills. As well as plenty of compositional and improvisation opportunities, lessons are also inspired by Kodaly/Dalcroze/Orff ideas and methods, allowing children to explore music through sound and movement. Links to curriculum/Possible assessment opportunities: Use the voice expressively and creatively by singing songs and speaking chants and rhymes Play tuned and untuned instruments musically Listen with concentration and understanding to a range of high-quality live and recorded music Experiment with, create, select and combine sounds using the inter-related dimensions of music Please note: I have used the font AR CHRISTY for a lot of the slides so it may look slightly different!

DJ Disc Jockeys Wordsearch Puzzle Sheet Keywords Settler Starter Cover Lesson Careers Jobs

DJ Disc Jockeys Wordsearch Puzzle Sheet Keywords Settler Starter Cover Lesson Careers Jobs

Wordsearch Puzzle sheet on the theme of ‘DJs’. Powerpoint so can be used on the board or printed as a worksheet. Includes space for students to explain the keywords and suggested extension activities. Can take 10 minutes or an hour, depending on which activities the students complete. Ideal for the start of a lesson, a quick filler, a homework, part of a cover lesson or as a plenary on the board with a whiteboard pen. The idea behind these is to get students to become more literate and think independently about the words that could be used to describe the topic being taught. The repetition of the word over and over as they look for the word is useful in remembering the terms. Often the students will pick up on things that you would not normally expect!
