SPECIAL PLACES PILGRIMAGE UNIT RELIGIOUS EDUCATION RE KS3

SPECIAL PLACES PILGRIMAGE UNIT RELIGIOUS EDUCATION RE KS3

This is quite a large unit - each lesson lasts at least an hour - some lessons last more. There are at least 7 lessons here - but when I taught it, it stretched out longer than that. You are paying for 33 resources in total. The lessons focus on the point of pilgrimage and towards the end, there is some discussion about whether all pilgrimage is religious. It focuses on a mix of world religions deliberately because I wanted to include small parts of Hinduism, Buddhism and Sikhism that I felt were lacking in my Year 7 curriculum. However, Christianity, Judaism and Islam also feature quite heavily. I used this with Year 7 but it could work with Year 8 as an introduction task - or even as a “nurture” class project and would also be perfect for anyone who home educates. There is a mix of tasks including group work, extended pieces of writing, research tasks, assessment questions and peer/self assessments - as well as a final assessment. My students really enjoyed it. There is also a differentiation booklet of resources for the less able which can be broken down if you would rather. There are also tasks for “fast finishers” and everything is supported with sentence starters and word frames, as well as measurable success criteria for most of the bigger tasks. The unit looks at Lourdes, Mecca, 3 sites in India, Jerusalem and a non religious pilgrimage study of the film “Africa United”. There is homework included in the form of a differentiation “takeaway” homework project. You might have to buy that DVD - it cost me less that £2 on Amazon. There is also a baseline test and hyper links to relevant clips. You could literally download this and be ready to teach in minutes. Enjoy. :)

Includes full powerpoint with links to inspirational music & video, complete delivery notes/script for assembly leader and suggestions for follow-up activities. Minimal prep: quick-read notes, check presentation, good to go. Intended for use across Years 7 to 13 but flexible enough to adapt for younger years. Could also be used in reflective RE lesson. More TTT assembly resources for 2018-2019 to come as I get them done.

Palestine & Israel: Eyewitness in the classroom

Palestine & Israel: Eyewitness in the classroom

This lesson plan is a rich primer for secondary schools on Palestine and Israel today, but more than that, it’s an opportunity to invite a human rights observer to your classroom. Speakers from Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme in Palestine and Israel (EAPPI) are ready to visit your school to share their eyewitness stories. The lesson sets up a rich discussion of human rights and how to respond to conflict. Invite an Ecumenical Accompanier to your school via eappi@quaker.org.uk - in the meantime check out the material which supports English, Religious Education, Geography and Citizenship learning.

This unit includes all you need to teach for around a term to KS2. There are lesson power points with back up activities, sheets, discussion points, resources, assessments etc. There is an assessment and a scheme of work to go with the powerpoint too. Covers rules, who is my neighbour/Good Samaritan, Sermon on the Mount, Mother Teresa. Jewish Shema, Sikh 5 Ks, Buddhist 5 precepts, 5 Pillars of Islam and life of St Paul in the New Testament (these are only story references with pages linked to books we have in school so you would need to develop this slide further if you do not have children’s Bibles to read from). I will build on this next year but we had a long term so I added them in to keep me going… The PPT has 10 lessons and 63 slides with activities. You can pretty much walk into the room and teach from it, without further resources. Ideal if RS cover teacher or non-specialist too. I have developed a whole unit work from Year 5 up to Year 8 which I am now uploading. These have taken me hundreds of hours so I hope this saves you lots of time. Happy Sunday!
