A fun model instructional text about defeating a dragon, plus feature find worksheet with answers.
Based on the Polish legend of the Wawel Dragon from Kraków, these instructions tell the reader how to defeat the dragon without the use of weapons.

In pairs or small groups, pupils build expanded noun phrases using the cards provided.
Two versions of the cards are supplied: a colour version, and a more challenging black and white version. Blank cards are supplied for pupils to change or build on the expanded noun phrases they have completed, or to create their own expanded noun phrases as an extension activity.
Noun Phrase Identifying Handout
Pupils identify the different parts of expanded noun phrases, and find the noun phrases in sentences, with activities getting increasingly more challenging. Example phrases and sentences are taken from Chapter 1 of The Iron Man. An answer sheet is provided for quick and easy marking.
Noun Phrase Writing Activity
Pupils create their own expanded noun phrases to describe the Iron Man by adding pre- and post-modifiers using the grid provided. An extension, a paragraph writing activity, is also included.

Pupils examine the personality of Ada and other characters in this differentiated character trait matching exercise.
Pupils match the main characters from Children of the Benin Kingdom by Dinah Orji with character traits and evidence from the text.
The quotes from the text have been provided, alongside the character traits and definitions.
This resource has been differentiated three ways:
• Higher ability: 10 characters, quotes and character traits have been provided.
• Middle ability: 10 characters, quotes and character traits with their definitions have been provided.
• Lower ability: 7 characters, quotes and character traits with their definitions have been provided.
This activity is a great way for pupils to think carefully about how a character’s personality is revealed by what they do and how they react in a story. This gives pupils an opportunity to use their inference skills.
An answer sheet has been included.

Teach pupils about the use of literary devices and figurative language in Alfred Noyes’ poem The Highwayman using these four activities with differentiation.
The classic poem is full of literary devices such as similes, metaphors and personification. Examples of these and more are explored to give pupils a deeper understanding of the text.
Literary devices and figurative language examples are explored in the following activities:
• Literary Device Match (differentiated x3): pupils match the literary devices with their definitions and examples (ideal as a paired or small group activity). Answers included.
• Completing Similes (differentiated x2): complete the similes using the appropriate noun phrase and then complete an extension activity. Answers included.
• Identifying Literary Devices: pupils find and underline listed literary devices used in every stanza of the poem. Answers included.
• Simile and Metaphor Meanings (differentiated x3): pupils explain the meanings, or match the meanings, of the similes and metaphors from the poem. Answers included.

The Highwayman poetry pack containing a verse-by-verse PowerPoint presentation of Alfred Noyes’ poem, a pupil copy of the poem, a glossary and an event sorting activity with answers.
Pupil Copy of the Poem
A document containing the poem with each part and verse numbered to make it easy to refer to different sections, and space beside the text for note-taking.
Poem Presentation
The 21 slide presentation is organised with each verse on a different slide. The parts and verses are numbered. Two versions have been provided: one without a glossary, useful for first readings; and one with images or definitions of challenging vocabulary displayed at the bottom of each slide.
Glossary
A two-page Word/PDF document of words used in the poem, with word class, meanings and images.
Sorting Activity
The key events sorting activity can be completed individually, in pairs or, ideally, in small groups. This will help pupils to understand the storyline of this narrative poem. Answers have been provided.
