This is a resource which explains why the Conservatives fell from power in 1964 with an activity based on the Profumo affair. There is a video hyperlink to a sky news broadcast after the death of Profumo which gives an overview of the scandal. The lesson looks at the impact of the affair on the Conservative government, 1963-64 and also looks at the other factors which caused the government to fall from power in 1964.

This lesson explores the social change of the period 1951-64 and also analyses the racial tension of the period. There is a hyperlinked video clip to explain how immigrants from the Commonwealth were viewed in the 1950s and the issues they faced. Students are then introduced to youth culture and there are two hyperlinked video clips; the mods and rockers, and the clashes at Margate. A task is included which will require the AQA Sally Waller textbook. A source activity is included to summarise the changes of the period and the lesson concludes with an essay. A set of notes is also provided together with two model answers.

Decolonisation requires the use of the AQA Sally Waller textbook and access to the internet as students will be researching why coundtries left the empire. The EEC exercise introduces students as to why Britain decided not to join the EEC and the effects of this. There are sets of notes to accompany each powerpoint.

There are two lessons which cover Thatcher's foreign policy towards Europe and the USA. The first lesson deals with the Special Relationship and students will investigate the role of Margaret Thatcher, Ronald Reagan, Gorbachev and Pope John Paul II in bringing and end to the Cold War. There is a hyperlink to the drama, Threads, in order for students to debate the attitude of people living in the west towards nuclear war at that time. There is a set of notes to accompany the lesson. The second lesson looks at Thatcher's attitude to Europe and begins with two hyperlinks showing different attitudes to Europe including Thatcher's famous 'no, no, no' speech. Students will need access to the AQA Sally Waller textbook and there is a set of notes to accompany the lesson.
