World Book Day in German for Years 9 - 11

World Book Day in German for Years 9 - 11

I designed this resource for an able Year 9 group, but you could use it for GCSE groups too. You could start by reading out the book descriptions on page 3, and pupils guess the book you are describing. Then pupils have to match up the images of the book covers, authors and main characters. Then they use the sheet to compose their own book review. It’s differentiated, so all can manage phrases from the yellow box, and some will also manage ones from the green. You might want to give out the text of the book descriptions you started with, you may prefer not to. A nice plenary with an able group is to get them reading out their book reviews, and pupils guess which book they are describing. Hope it’s useful!

German Fairy Tale "Der Hase un der Igel" - read, laugh, write

German Fairy Tale "Der Hase un der Igel" - read, laugh, write

Revising for written exams and/or need an enjoyable German lesson? Motivate students to learn and write with a humourous, lesser-known Grimms fairy tale with colourful slides and parallel English text. This lesson meets requirements for Key Stage 3 writing and grammar, but is adaptable to other levels. First focus on reading and guessing meaning from context, then use the story’s sentences as templates to consolidate use of sentence structure & some grammar items. Students are motivated by the humour and the opportunity to be creative. The lesson can be divided into 2 45-minute sessions or used in part as desired.

German consolidation booklet (1hr - sport, music, film)

German consolidation booklet (1hr - sport, music, film)

"Consolidation booklet". Topics revised: sport; music; film. Types of activities: writing; gap fill; translation; reading; code breaking (brief); word search. Grammar revised: verb conjugation; adverbs of frequency; comparatives (brief); adjectives; opinions; tenses - past, present, future. Practical application: has been used as a consolidation lesson with Year 9 pupils. Highly customisable but can be used as-is (needs only relevant images adding to complete and this has been clearly labelled). Differentiation: e.g. add verb prompts to activity 1, key words for activities 3 & 4, remove "why" from the questions in activity 4 or ask simpler questions/re-write the text, remove the code-breaker for HALs, amend the questions for activity 7, provide the German words to find for activity 9's word search.
