Please use these mats as a revision games to play in groups in the classroom. They should be printed on A3 paper and laminated so that it can be re-used. This means that students can write their initials on their square instead of using counters. The way the game is played can be manipulated. However, the main instructions are as follows (also included on sheet): Roll Two Die to Create a Co-ordinate. Place your coloured counter on the square that the roll corresponds to. If answer is correct, receive points as follows: Points: Red squares are worth 1, Yellow squares score 2 points, and Green squares score 5 points Grades: Red squares are 4/5 Grade, Yellow squares and 6/7 Grade and Green Squares and 8/9 Grade answers Please use a great revision resource for group work. Please also leave any feedback for future revision mats and how to improve them.

Exit Ticket - Pearson's Product Moment

I give this to the students (printed in A4 or A5 depending on how much room they need) at the end of the lesson to assess an overview of the lesson. I mark it as soon as I can (ha) and it allows me to spot any misconceptions. The last question is a challenge one to push the most able students.

Collecting and representing data vocabulary crossword

Collecting and representing data vocabulary crossword

This is a crossword with data vocabulary. It would be useful as - revision - lesson starter - settling activity - cover work - end of term activity - extension task - literacy support for EAL or SEND students - literacy across the curriculum - assessment for learning or afl task Contains printable pdf and answers. The learning objective is to introduce or revise data vocabulary in a fun and relaxing way. This activity could be used at the start of a topic to introduce key vocabulary by having students fill out as much as they can independently and then check their answers and fill in the gaps using the answer sheet provided. Once students have all the answers they can save the crossword to refer to during the course as a useful list of vocab and definitions. This would help students with dyslexia to spell the vocab correctly and would enable all students with high language needs to refer back to the definitions as required to allow them to access later lessons. This activity could also be used for revision where students might complete several crosswords in a lesson or for homework. They would work at their own pace to identify areas where they need focus their revision.

Correlation and scatter plots

Correlation and scatter plots

This resource can be spread over 2 or 3 lessons depending how deep you want to go into correlation. Lesson 1 will cover the basics. I use lesson 2 in the PowerPoint more like a mini project but can be skipped if required. Lesson 3 is more based on higher level thinking trying to find the equations of lines of best fits and use extrapolation.

Statistics: Scatter Diagrams, Correlation and Lines of Best Fit (+ resources)

Statistics: Scatter Diagrams, Correlation and Lines of Best Fit (+ resources)

This is a whole lesson on scatter diagrams and the introductory lesson to looking at regression and correlation. It includes a starter, key words, lesson objectives, some excellent clear teaching examples, a worksheet with answers and plenary. I have also included an old help sheet I had to help the less able during the lesson. The help sheet went down very well when being observed. The worksheet is only a couple of questions, but it does come with answers. After that I like to use any spare time to think about the context of the question and writing conclusions to further improve understanding and applying maths in real life. Golden Ratio Scatter Graphs

Golden Ratio Scatter Graphs

Lesson Plans, starter and presentations for 2 lessons worth, if some textbook exercises are used alongside. Plenary provided for both lessons - True/False and key words. I always use the Hans Rosling video (link in smartboard) to engage the students. At end of lesson 1, I get students to measure each other's head lengths and widths, and this data is what forms the main of Lesson 2. Use the student data to draw scatter graphs. (my smartboard gives some random student data, and my own measurements - students find it funny to see me as an anomaly in the scattergraph and we discuss why this is.) Discuss broken axes , line of best fit and anomalies. I then give them the excel produced graph (slide 4), and then a 'perfect' line of best fit (slide 5) which shows where they should be if they are to be considered 'mathematically beautiful' as given by the Golden Ratio! (Notice my position now!!). Next few slides give some stimulus to discuss golden ratio and its uses in the artistic/natural world.

Gapminder Video 11 - Gapminder and Autograph

The 11th in Mr Barton's Gapminder World Video series. In this video, we fuse together two of my favourite things - Gapminder World and Autograph. We see how we can process the data from Gapminder using Autograph's powerful statistical engine in order to anyalse the strength of correlation. More statistical diagrams next week! Below the video you will find an option to download it and play it on a larger screen, or by clicking on the web-link you can see all the videos in this series
