GERMAN IDIOMS: HELPING YOU TOWARDS A GCSE A*

GERMAN IDIOMS: HELPING YOU TOWARDS A GCSE A*

This resource has been produced with GCSE potential A* candidates in mind. There are altogether 48 idioms, but if the students can become confident in handling a handful of them, they are going to impress the examiners like me. the resource includes an initial matching up exercise, where guess work will come into play, then a complete list with examples of each. students then have the opportunity to practice and extend their vocabulary through tasks such as reading a definition and supplying the correct idiom, putting in the missing word, and replacing a rather humdrum phrase with a more impressive idiom. I hope they will engage your students. The tasks should prove challenging and enjoyable.

Double Worksheet - Describing Pets / Animals - Physically + Personality +

Double Worksheet - Describing Pets / Animals - Physically + Personality +

This can be done in class or as a homework (for sharp learners) and presupposes acquisition of vocab for pets, physical description, personality and also a few clothes (&colour) . It showcases the use of some longer sentences with conjunctions UND and ABER. The longer gapfill tasks offer a decreasing level of support and the last writing task is merely providing a picture prompt. (i.e. the task requires "free writing")

Echo Express 1 Module 3 Vocabulary Matching Exercises

Echo Express 1 Module 3 Vocabulary Matching Exercises

These simple yet versatile matching exercises are made from the vocabulary used in module 3 of Echo Express 1. They can be used as starters, extensions, plenaries, homework and revision. They are also great for measuring progress when used as a starter and a plenary in the same lesson. They can also be colour-coded / traffic lighted to provide instant feedback as well as a focus for assessment revision. I always let pupils choose whether they want to write the answers in in English or the Target Language. Matching with lines never works! I have had great feedback from pupils when using them and hope you will too. Please let me know if you find typos / mistakes.

Great German Insults (classroom-friendly) Aimed at Y9

Great German Insults (classroom-friendly) Aimed at Y9

Some non-rude German insults aimed at a small group of year 9s. Aim of making the language seem a bit more fun. This is supposed to be a bit of funny lesson, and it's all fairly light-hearted. Ways to use resource: 1) Give out copy of the sheets and go through pronunciation of each one. Make sure pupils know where the stress lies - call and repeat. Included in one example is a video from Friends to demonstrate Joey's cute simpleness. Stop it after 20 seconds, as that gets the point across. 2) Sheet three is to see if they can correctly identify the appropriate insult for the people listed :D 3) If you felt it was appropriate (though I think you'd only do this with certain classes), you could get them to write an insult for a friend - be careful though in case some pupils are not high attainers, as they might take it to heart if they get called an "Evolutionsbremse") This will take roughly 20-30 minutes.

A tarsia consists of puzzle pieces that the students cut out and then match words to form a certain shape (ideally students don’t know what shape that is). They will quickly realise their mistakes if the puzzle won’t fit together. Great activity for Friday afternoons, cover lessons or end of term. This download includes: sheets for students with jumbled up puzzle pieces, an answer sheet for the teacher in list form and one showing the shape. If the print quality of the student slide isn’t good enough, use the attached pdf file.

German KS2 & KS3 - Creating Funny Families. (Self & Family)

German KS2 & KS3 - Creating Funny Families. (Self & Family)

This set of resources is an excellent way to finish work on self and family. It will take at least 4 lessons. There is a build up to the main activity when pupils work in groups and create their own funny families, which they present to the rest of the class. I have used this over many years with many groups and have refined it. I can honestly say pupils love doing it. Everything is presented in a step-by-step format and could be used by a non-specialist or cover teacher. There are two Power Points and range of worksheets. The first PowerPoint is to re-cap work on self and family and will be a lead into the main activity. In this first PowerPoint three members of the same family present information about themselves – the first very simply, the next has more information and the third is a longer text. For the first two family members there are differentiated exercises – very simple with circling the correct answer or true and false to open ended questions. You can choose to use different tasks for different ability groups within the class or it can all be used for the whole class. The second PowerPoint introduces the group activity in a step-by-step way. Pupils will work in groups to create a funny family, but each person in the group will be responsible for one family member so ultimately each pupil will be producing their own piece of work. There are several help sheets for pupils of all abilities and there are answers for all exercises included. Finally the pupils will present their families in groups to the rest of the class. They can be assessed on the written work produced and/or the oral presentation.
