GCSE Maths/Functional Skills- Probability Spinners Card Match

GCSE Maths/Functional Skills- Probability Spinners Card Match

A matching card activity to reinforce that probability ranges from 0 to 1. Learners have to match color spinners to the correct answer card. For example a spinner may have 2 red slices out of 5 slices and learners will have to find a card that says 0.4 chance of landing on red I use it as a paired activity, though could be individual, it gets learners writing probability as fractions and then changing them to decimals, also reinforces that the chance of something happening only ranges from 0 to 1.

Crossover with Probability and Number

Crossover with Probability and Number

Today’s resource looks at cards with calculations on. Students are then asked to calculate the probability of choosing a randomly selected card and it having a certain property. What I really like about this resource is it means students can practise their number calculations with BIDMAS, test them on their understanding of types of numbers, all whilst answering a probability question. This would be a good resource for a year 7 class and encompasses fluency reasoning and problem solving. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did making it.

Calculating Probability Interactive Activity - KS2 Number

Calculating Probability Interactive Activity - KS2 Number

KS2 Number - Calculating Probability Interactive Activity This interactive game uses a number of known counters of up to five colours hidden in a box. Pupils try to predict which colour counter will come out next by calculating the probability for each colour (pupils can use the calculator for their calculations). This is a great activity to use with the whole class or for pupils to work on independently, providing great practice in calculating probability.

Deal or No Deal Probability Game

Deal or No Deal Probability Game

I created this as a transition activity for year 6. During the 30min session we discussed probabilities in terms of likely & Unlikely and moved on to probabilities using fractions. The students enjoyed this as the discussion of maths was light but also thought provoking as it was mostly students led. Included: PowerPoint for removing the revealed values Box template for printing on red card I have made the boxes deliberately complex so they are sturdy enough to be used more than once. For the values that get revealed I laminated them so that hey could be fixed with blu-tac so that they could be moved around to keep the game fresh. Alternatively you could print out a box image on a piece of card with the money printed on the other side.

Fantasy Roleplaying (6-8 Hours)

Fantasy Roleplaying (6-8 Hours)

Personally, I’m a big fan of role-playing games and miniature games so I decided to incorporate some of those elements into a unit of work I’ve done with my low-ability English group around Fantasy Fiction. This will allow students to create their own character and then go on their own adventure as a group working together to complete a quest and defeat stereotypical fantasy enemies. The story and enemies are lead and controlled by the class teacher, and this best works with smaller groups of around 4-6 students. The lessons focus on: Problem solving skills Addition & subtraction Dice probability Team-working skills Role-playing Setting description and visualization Creative writing If you are familiar with how Dungeons & Dragons works then this should all be very familiar with you. There is also a free campaigned provided which is already readily available for free elsewhere (ignore the statistics and number in it, I just used it purely for the story element), you are also free to write your own campaign. All you need to get your hands on are some 6 and 20-sided dice. There are also many places on the internet already where you can simulate this dice rolls. Enjoy, we had a right laugh doing this and then were really engaged!

Unlock the code to escape the room by answering simple probability questions. I use this with a set of combination locks I bought cheap in a poundshop. I set the locks to open on a set combination which can only be got by answering the questions. The quickest team to get the combination win. This activity generates great fun in class and is worth the investment in a set of cheap combi locks

Four sets of “Crack The Safe” worksheets that get increasingly difficult regarding probability. These allow students to self-check rather than rely on the teacher as possible solutions are given, but more than required to prevent guessing. These work nicely as starters or plenaries for me.
