Year 8 Spring-Summer SOW 2017 Development 5) Ghana Fact File WITH ANSWERS

This lesson is an introduction to Ghana and to make students aware of the physical and human landscape. I use the Geog.3 (coffee cup version). The settler to the lesson is to create two questions to test the student's peers in the starter. This is a team-based game called Butt Head where students ask questions to win balls to throw at a cap worn on the student's head. I have put instructions on the slide. The main (seen opposite) is a series of questions to hook the students about the lack of lights in rural Ghana. The questions have marks and ANSWERS on the next slide to peer or self assess. The main activity in the lesson is to create a poster on Ghana as a fact file in pairs using page 10-15 of the Geog.1 book. There is an extension of an empathetic diary entry of resident living in poverty. The development is a conundrum using a keypad as a puzzle for students. The plenary is called 'Mr Right or Mr Wrong' whereby students have to judge whether the facts are right or wrong. ANSWERS are provided to self or peer assess.

The lesson has a work booklet and introduces students into the historical past of the colonisation of Africa. It has source work and questions from a video link- seen opposite is the ANSWERS. #CHANGED FOR AN OFSTED INSPECTION- RATED OUTSTANDING! The lesson starts with a political cartoon and key questions to discuss in pairs. The starter is GeoSingStar whereby students create a poem, rap or song on 6 facts about Africa- this uses the new edition of the Geog.1 textbook or the pages of the Longmans School Atlas. The mini-plenary can be a task before the starter whereby students work independently to discover facts on Africa using the two textbooks cited. They then use this as a think-pair-share task. This will help with the factual knowledge for the GeoSingStar the following lesson. The main activity is a video link with questions for the scramble for Africa. The challenge task is analysis of political cartoons. Both activities has a mark scheme. The main activity uses the pages of the Geog.1 textbook to create a story board on the colonisation of Africa (the video link can be also be used). This works on the 'because' technique (SEE LEARNING WALL RESOURCES). The development is anagrams with an extension task, which is followed by hot potato. You can use the alternative plenary of GeoSingStar.

Lesson 2: Challenging perceptions of Africa - KS3 Geography Africa Unit 2017

1. Pre-starter task “How many legs does the elephant have?” followed by “What can you see?” 2. Begin discussion that not everything is quite as we see it – link to perceptions of Africa. 3. Pupils write down three words on three post-its associated with Africa. This will be used towards the end of the lesson to reflect on. 4. Discuss the actual size of Africa – bring in idea of Mercator maps and size disparities of continents. 5. Mental images task – pupils look at the images and complete their work sheet. 6. Define stereotype – follow up with the infographics of Africa to further challenge the stereotypes. 7. Pupils rewrite three words on another set of posts it notes – has these words changed from their original ones? Why? If it hasn’t, why not? 8. Africa Quiz – to complete individually. H/W for MAS – Extended writing task. Describe how perceptions and images of Africa can be misleading. Please review :)

Investigating Cities - Shenzhen, China

This is a 4-page worksheet that gets students to investigate the city of Shenzhen in China which has grown from little more than a fishing village in the 1970s to an expanding metropolis of 11 million people today. Shenzhen is commonly known as the "Silicon Valley of China". The worksheet has some mapping questions that look at Shenzen's location and changes in land use over time, some statistics on the climate of the city, and a series of questions on the growth of the city and its impact that can be answered from the BBC News (link is provided). An answer key is provided for teachers. The worksheet would be useful for the Australian Curriculum unit on Liveability and for those jurisdictions where urban development is a focus, perhaps from lower to upper high school Geography.
