#### The Mondrian Squares Puzzle

Puzzle-based learning? No worries - use this activity that promotes problem-solving skills in maths! This puzzle is inspired by artist Piet Mondrian. The challenge is to divide a square in a way that will create the smallest possible difference between the area of the largest and the smallest rectangle. The rules are: The square must be entirely covered by unique rectangles. #### Maths roll the dice game

Roll the dice activity is perfect for revision, morning starters or end of term fun. Children roll 1,2 or 3 dice and write the number (total) in the circle. They use that number with each operation suggested in the sun. You decide which calculations children needs to practise before the mats are photocopied.

Finally finding Lowest Common Multiples. Factors and Multiples Game. There is a similar game using only the numbers 1- 25, but it doesn’t have a solution. This puzzle has been changed so pupil’s don’t feel cheated and can find a solution! Investigations using Indices. Prime Pirate Maze. A very simple way of reinforcing the prime numbers and the “look” of a prime number. With less able groups write on the bottom of the sheet all the prime numbers from 1 to 100 as a reminder. The strategy for solving the maze is interesting to watch. Some pupils start from different points trying to find routes. Some simply colour in the prime numbers at random until the routes appear! A Prime Maze. Prime and Square Numbers. A snakes and ladders game used to reinforce prime numbers and square numbers. It makes it a lot more interesting if pupils have to land exactly on the win square to finish. Multiplying by Powers of 10. Dividing by Powers of 10. Zap to Zero. Place Value. A game using the skills of place value. Stamps Four different investigations using stamps as a central theme.Probability (Equally Likely Outcomes). Questions based around equally likely outcomes. Assigning Probabilities. The different ways of assigning probabilities are dealt with here. Pupils have to carry out surveys and experiments. There are SAT style questions choosing which method of assigning a probability is best. Finally, comparing Theory and Experimental probabilities. Experimental Probabilities. (Bonus pages). Pupils should be encouraged to find probabilities by experiment. Here we have questions based on experiments or surveys that have previously been carried out.

A comprehensive set of 4 mental maths tests (with answers) which I designed for my KS3 class. I have used them as starters for my class to get their brains going and get them focused. I've also used them as plenaries and as assessments before teaching a topic to check the prior knowledge of pupils. I used these lessons with a middle ability year 7 lesson at the start of the year to see how their basic skills were with decimals, negatives, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division skills. All lessons contain: 5 a day starter, learning objectives with progress tick sheet, Fully animated and clear examples, Differentiated, colour-coordinated questions WITH answers, Lesson 1: Place Value and ordering decimals. Includes a starter on writing numbers in words, examples of what place value means, leading onto how we can use this to find the value of numbers/decimals and order them. Lesson 2: Multiplication and division of integers of 10. Simple, clear examples with whiteboard activity to check progress, great for all abilities. Independent, varied colour coded differentiated questions as main activity. Lesson 3: Add and Subtract negative numbers. Introduction with temperature, followed by clear examples and differentiated and functional questions about real life examples. Lesson 4: Multiplying and dividing negative numbers! Separate examples of multiplication and division of negative numbers, with individual questions to complete for main task and challenging multiplication grid activity to end. Lesson 5: Mental addition and subtraction. Exploring various methods of mental addition and subtraction so students can be introduced to, hopefully, some useful new methods! Lesson 6: Written methods of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Numerous examples to go through as a class/students to go through with odd one out activities to self assess and mark work. These are some of my favourite lessons to use to really find out what students’ number skills are like at the start of a year!
