Standard Form Reasoning Tasks

Standard Form Reasoning Tasks

Several tasks all based an Edexcel GCSE question (from the specimen papers) about standard form and substitution. These tasks are designed to improve students’ mathematical reasoning and were created as part of the Mathematical Reasoning at GCSE project run by Cambridge Maths Hub. The tasks vary in difficulty, and include work on ratio, surface area and volume of spheres, units of compound measures, density and direct/inverse proportion. They are not intended to be used all together; just pick and choose one or two suitable ones for your class. The Venn diagram task is an excellent idea I swiped from the amazing Mr Barton. If you’re after a similar task that focuses more explicitly on surface area, volume and density, you might like https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/density-and-volume-reasoning-tasks-11837600. Please consider leaving some feedback. I’d be really interested to hear which tasks you chose and how you used them!

Converting measures colour in - what's the word? (Challenging!)

Converting measures colour in - what's the word? (Challenging!)

Students colour in the true boxes - this gives a letter per box, which is an anagram of an 8 letter word (triangle!) which the students have to find. Worked really well on what can be a bit of a dull topic. There are some very challenging questions on both metric and imperial conversions, and also a bit of mathematical general knowledge thrown in too!

Year 6 - Measurement - Converting Units - Week 7 - Spring - Block 4

Year 6 - Measurement - Converting Units - Week 7 - Spring - Block 4

This pack covers Year 6 - Measurement: Converting Units (Block 4 - week 7). It covers the small steps: • Metric measures • Converting metric measures • Calculating with metric measures • Miles and Kilometres • Imperial measures The resources in this pack listed below include worksheets and activities along with answers for each pack: • Worksheets - Metric measures • Worksheets - Converting metric measures • Worksheets - Calculating with metric measures • Worksheets - Miles and Kilometres • Worksheets - Imperial measures • Morning activities for the week • Contextual planning sheet for the block The resources support a mastery approach to encourage a deeper understanding of the topics taught. It follows a CPA (Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract) approach to ensure all children can access learning. The pack provides pictorial and abstract representations, along with reasoning, problem solving and open-ended investigations. Details of this can be seen in the contextual overview provided. If you want the planning for Week 8 + 9 for Block 5: Area, Perimeter and Volume please see here: Year 6 - Measurement - Area, Perimeter and Volume - Week 8 - Spring - Block 5 Year 6 - Measurement - Area, Perimeter and Volume - Week 9 - Spring - Block 5 I hope you find them useful.
