It also looks at food sustainability. After the initial teaching stage students need to think of the factors that affect food security. They then need to consider the changes to make to the global and local food supply to make it more sustainable. There is an associated homework task that looks at Fairtrade Scheme. This will need to be printed from the PowerPoint.

Food Sources - GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition - Food Provenance - Fully Resourced Lesson.

This is a resource pack with 4 hours worth of lessons for GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition. It has been designed to follow the AQA specification but covers where our food comes from say may be suitable for all specifications. The resource is fully planned and resourced. This is a student led resource. Lesson 1 starts with basic teaching on where our food comes from and how it is reared or caught. It introduces the key terms of intensive and free range farming. It also looks at organic and genetically modified foods. Students then need to research a farming area. Each area has a PowerPoint slide to be printed to guide students through the research. The areas looked at are: o Free range eggs vs caged hens eggs – This has been differentiated so it probably best for lower attainers. o Farmed Fish vs Caught Fish – This is more suitable for your high attainers o Genetically Modified o Organic Food o Intensive vs. Free range meat. Students need to prepare a Presentation and a handout. The second lesson allows students to continue with research before giving their presentations. A sheet has been designed to allow students to record information from each others presentations.

Environmental Issues in Food: Food Waste, Packaging Waste, Carbon Footprint and Seasonality.

This is a resource pack with 4 hours worth of lessons for GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition. It has been designed to follow the AQA specification on Food Provenance. However it covers environmental issues covered in all specifications. The resource is fully planned and resourced. It looks at the environmental issues associated with the food industry. Lesson 1 - This focuses on an overview of all environmental issues. Students then look at food waste and how to avoid it. Students then need to plan and prepare a dish from common wasted food ingredients. The last part of the lesson looks at food miles, packaging waste and carbon footprint. This lesson is designed to be delivered over two hours, but may take longer depending on the depth you go into. Student activities to complete have been differentiated. Lesson 2 - Looks at seasonality of food and is practical based. Students produce a fruit tartlet.
