Inspirational People - Presentation and activities

Inspirational People - Presentation and activities

Work for a few lessons on Inspirational People, both historical and contemporary and male and female. Ideal for RS and/or PHSE work. Suitable for Years 5-10 but all files are editable and can be adapted to suit differing needs and abilities. Includes: -Detailed powerpoint on 10 people who have stood for something in which they believed strongly. Could be used as whole class discussion or printed off as slides for groups to feedback main points, possibly as part of a research lesson gathering extra facts. -Overview - A3 sheet showing the photographs of all 10 people. Children fill in some biographical information and try to summarise the main points of for what they stood and the hardships they faced. This is probably more suited to an older or higher ability group. -Key Themes - A4 sheet with pictures and a list of key themes. Children match the key themes to the different characters, possibly as part of a group lesson where groups are feeding back research findings. -Balloon debate cards. A fun activity where groups of children have to persuade the rest of the class why their character deserves a place in a rapidly sinking balloon, rather than being thrown over the side. The cards can be cut out, they have the photograph of the character on one side and space for notes on the back. A good introduction to debating and persuasive speaking.

A Refugee's Story: Lesson Plan & Film

A Refugee's Story: Lesson Plan & Film

See here for the accompanying lesson plan. This short film tells the story of Mohammed Alsaleh, a young Syrian refugee granted asylum in Canada in 2014. After fleeing torture and imprisonment by the Assad regime, he is rebuilding his life. Mohammed counsels newly-arrived Syrian refugee families with the same Vancouver-based NGO that aided him during his own resettlement process. Like Mohammed, these families have left loved ones behind and are struggling to adapt to a new land, finding resilience and hope for a new beginning. Like thousands of other newly-resettled refugees, Mohammed has been striving to bring his family to safety in Canada. Millions of Syrians are currently displaced within Syria’s borders and in neighboring countries. Students watch a 19-minute documentary that tells the story of Mohammed Alsaleh, a young Syrian refugee granted asylum in Canada in 2014, who is now counseling newly arrived refugees. In this lesson, students explore the themes of cultural displacement, human rights, and resilience. Reflective writing prompts are also included for students to demonstrate their understanding of the story. In the accompanying lesson (see link above), students explore the themes of cultural displacement, human rights, and resilience through classroom discussions. Reflective writing prompts are also included for students to demonstrate their understanding of the story. English and Spanish versions of the lesson plan are available for download.

Explain who Ghandi was and what his beliefs were (complete lesson)

This is a complete lesson for lower KS2 pupils who are studying Hinduism in RE and have already had a basic introduction to the concepts of Ahimsa, Karma and Dharma. There is a starter intended to ‘hook’ the children in by getting them to ask the questions - these questions could then be used in an alternative plenary in which pupils can answer their original questions. The reading activity could be completed in groups of four (one card each) or pairs (two cards each). There are comprehension questions at the bottom for the pupils to ask each there peers after reading each section. Finally, the main written activity is differentiated three ways to allow children to apply their new understanding of Ghandi and his beliefs.
