STEAM Thinking - Analyzing Bridges

STEAM Thinking - Analyzing Bridges

Note: Some of my products have some “out there” ideas. Make sure to look at the preview before purchasing. Everyone's classroom is unique and while these lessons work within my classroom, that may not be the case in another’s room. "You're begging me for a brand new start, Trying to mend a bridge that's been blown apart, But you know you never built it dad." (Bridge by Queensryche) As with any teacher, I’m always looking to create new and innovative ways to reach my students, grasp their attention and motivate them in new and meaningful ways. One manner in which I have had great success in reaching my teenagers of the digital age are my video game and writing creations. My newest creation combines a multitude of thinking and writing activities, inspired by the wonderful video game Bridge Constructor, created by the phenomenal game developer, Headup Games. This guide allows the students to think on high levels, as they will need to analyze mistakes made in my bridge designs, while proposing their own structural idea. The students will also review concepts relative to basic components of a bridge, along with Newton’s Laws of Motion. If one chooses to take this constructive journey, they may find it helpful to follow how I use this with my classes. Review Newton’s Laws of Motion. Give the students a printout of the basic bridge parts and forces/loads. Once you’ve given/reviewed the above basics, you can following the format below: Watch my poor bridge design video Complete the “Defining the Problem” page Complete the Visualize/Create page Watch my second bridge design video and complete the Evaluation page Complete the Analyze/Refine writing prompt Complete the Newton’s Laws page (the first bridge has been started done for you) Complete the bridge parts labels page ***Continue this process through each of the 8 bridges → Included in the Guide 3 Terms of Use 4 Core Standards 5 About the Guide 6 Recommendations for Teaching 7 Newton’s Laws of Motion 8 - 9 Bridge Basics 10 Bridge Components 11 - 17 Bridge 1 - West to East 18 - 24 Bridge 2 - The Valley 25 - 31 Bridge 3 - Really Big Valley 32 - 38 Bridge 4 - Over Troubled Water 39 - 45 Bridge 5 - Canyon Run 46 - 52 Bridge 6 - City to City 53 - 59 Bridge 7 - Insanity Ridge 60 - 66 Bridge 8 - Without a Paddle 67 - 76 Differentiation Writing Prompt - Bridge 77 References

Learn To Knit: A Lesson Plan And Guide

Learn To Knit: A Lesson Plan And Guide

If you want to learn to knit, and you’re not sure where or how to start (or whether you’ll even like knitting), this guide may provide just the basic, step-by-step encouragement you need! Here you will find 48 consecutive lessons which will guide you to learn, practise and apply basic knitting skills. These skills are, in order: how to ‘cast on’; how to do the ‘knit’ stitch; how to do the ‘purl’ stitch; how to ‘cast off’; how to combine ‘knit’ and ‘purl’ stitches to make 11 different knitting patterns; and how to do three, more advanced stitches (‘yarn over needle’, ‘knit two together’, 'purl two together’) which will also be used in patterns. Labels are provided for each of the patterns, which you can pin to your finished samples for easy reference. Three bonus lessons provide basic instructions for completing a simple project: a washcloth or doll blanket, a hair ‘thingy’, or a scarf. Important: Please note that this is only a lesson guide; the lessons here only offer a plan for you to follow in order to acquire the skills you need, one at a time, in an enjoyable, encouraging, effective and satisfying manner. To learn the actual mechanics of knitting, you will need to refer to a handful of clear, full-colour, free websites (addresses provided), or to a library book or parent/friend. Knitting and other crafts (such as paper mosaics) are excellent tools for developing fine motor skills. This in turn can improve a student’s performance in other areas such as playing a musical instrument, writing neatly, attention to detail, patience, and the ability to concentrate for longer periods of time. Go slowly and be generous with your praise – fine work takes practise and perseverance!

How to make CHRISTMAS CRACKERS

How to make CHRISTMAS CRACKERS

These crackers can be made by young children as well as adults. I have made them with children as young as Year 5, no problem providing that each component is already measured and cut out for them. Adults: you may make these for the dinner table as you can choose a nice gift for the inside instead of silly items, you can make each gift suit the person and label the cracker up as a dinner seating arrangement. The cracker snaps can easily be ordered on line and by replacing them each year, these crackers become re-cycleable. Have fun...
