Completing the Square 1 (Loop Cards)

I love to start one-to-one tutorials/interventions with a loop card activity. They are also excellent when working with small groups or as a starter or plenary for a whole class. Note that the questions have been carefully selected so that they provide good coverage of this sub-topic and so that the opportunities for students to guess answers are minimised.<hr>Colour coding: All my loop cards are colour-coded to indicate the approximate level of the questions: KS2 – red and orange KS3/GCSE Foundation – orange and green GCSE Higher – green, blue and purple<hr>Further information: In this download there are four sets of similar cards and a student chooses one of the sets and sorts them into order by answering the questions. Then they try to do it faster using a different set, which has the same questions, but a different sort order 😃 My favourite use of loop cards is for two students to have different versions of the cards and race each other. They then check their answers, shuffle, swap packs and race again (quickest overall time wins). More instructions are included in the download. I have put together a selection of problems from the Edexcel problem solving packs 2, 3 and 4. The questions should all be suitable for the non calculator papers and include solutions. I have also included some questions that are deemed to be calculator paper questions but can be answered without a calculator to further enhance and practise problem solving skills. I printed them out on A3 sheets and allowed students to work as a group of 3 -4 to solve the problems - feedback from students was positive.

Transforming graphs of a function/ Plotting transformations with Desmos/ GeoGebra

L/O: To plot and then comment on transformations of a function. Worksheet activity where students type in basic function f(x)=x squared into Desmos or GeoGebra and then do various transformations of this function. Students plot and draw what happens on the graphs and make a comment about what they find. Comment sections are scaffolded to guide pupils in describing the transformation. The worksheet is 4 sides of A4, with a gradual increase in difficulty. I have used this with high ability year 7 and 8 classes, plus high and middle ability year 9, 10 and 11 classes. Transforming function graphs (translations and reflections of non-trigonometric graphs) is grade 7 on the new GCSE 9-1 scale. As an unprotected Word document you can edit it as required.

Calculus: Optimisation

The presentation begins with a review of quadratics and presents students with an optimisation question which they are expected to solve using quadratics. The concept of optimisation is then explored in more detail by asking students to find the maximum volume that can be made from a 12cm x 12cm square (in the context of for instance minimising production costs). This site provides a useful platform through which to launch into a discussion about finding the maximum volume. There are then a selection of questions which I printed out and placed around the room for students to tackle, in pairs. For the plenary, the students are presented with a similar (but note not identical) problem to the one at the start of the lesson and are asked to solve using calculus before checking their answer using quadratics.
