Modelling with Algebra

This booklet provides a comprehensive treatment of mathematical modelling. It begins with thorough explanation and practice of basic algebraic techniques, such as solving equations, factorizing and changing the subject of a formula. It then covers linear, quadratic, exponential and trigonometric models. Numerous real-life examples are used to illustrate the techniques with an emphasis on the interpretation of mathematical results. Also covered are the concepts of reduction to linear form using logarithms and inverse functions. There are extensive exercises provided to enable students to practise the techniques learned. 16 Homework tasks are included at the end of the booklet. You will receive the original Word document as well as the pdf so you can edit it as you wish.

This is a mathematics worksheet with worked answers for a yr 10 (stage 5) student studying linear relationships. There are 10 questions. This worksheet covers the following NSW syllabus dot points for 2018: 5.1 Linear Relationships Use the process for calculating the ‘mean’ to find the midpoint of the interval joining two points on the Cartesian plane. Use the interval between two points on the Cartesian plane as the hypotenuse of a right angled triangle and use the relationship gradient = rise/run to find the gradient of the interval joining the two points. Use the interval between two points on the Cartesian plane s the hypotenuse of a right angled triangle and apply Pythagoras’ Theorem to determine the length of the interval joining the two points.

Equations of tangents of circles

Equations of tangents of circles

A complete lesson or two on finding equations of tangents to circles with centre the origin. Aimed at the new GCSE specification, although it could also be used with an A-level group. Activities included: Starter: Two recap questions on necessary prerequisites, the first on equations of circles, the second on equations of perpendicular lines. If pupils really struggled with this I would stop and address these issues, rather than persist with the rest of the lesson. Main: A set of questions on finding the gradient of OP, given some point P on a circle, followed by a related worksheet for pupils to practice. A follow-up ‘reverse’ task where pupils find points P such that the gradient of OP takes certain values. The intention is that pupils can do this task by logic and geometric reasoning, rather than by forming and solving formal equations, although the task could be further extended to look at this. The focus then shifts to gradients of tangents, and finally equations of tangents, with examples and a related set of questions for pupils to practice. An extension task where pupils find the equation of the circle given the tangent. Plenary: A spot the mistake question. Printable worksheets and answers included. Linear graphs match up activity

A match up activity for KS3 Mathematics. Students need to match up simple linear graphs with their equations, possible co-ordinates and tables of values. Some of the graphs and tables are left blank for students to fill in themselves. One of the graphs requires students to make up their own equation for a straight line and draw it. Examples of equations include; y=3, y=-x and y=3x+2. Materials included: 5 linear graphs and 3 blank axis, 8 tables of values with some missing values, 7 equations and 1 blank equation, 7 possible co-ordinates and 1 blank co-ordinate. There is also a copy of the graphs matched with their equations to provide some answers if needed.
