Equivalent Fraction - A Quick Starter

This was a starter I created for a lower ability Year 8 class - you may find it useful. Can you find the route through equivalent fractions only - it can be done The idea was just to raise some discussion as it won’t take most classes long to do this.

Measurement Problem Solving KS2 Romans

This activity combined our History topic of Romans, with our Maths focus of measurement, plus a little bit of shapes and fractions thrown as an assessment of the previous units taught. Students receive a letter from Emperor Hadrian, with the command to rebuild sections of Hadrian`s Wall. They then worked in differientiated groups for calculate the correct measurements for the wall. Once the correct measurements had been calculated they then used their knowledge of 3-D shapes to build the wall. I have included the activity and instructions in pdf and word format for editing. My class loved it, but I have to be honest - it took them all morning! Learning Objectives covered: Geometry: Property of Shapes: • Draw 2-D shapes and make 3-D shapes using modelling materials. Measurement: • Measure, compare, and add lengths (m/cm/mm) • Continue to measure using the appropriate tools and units, progressing to using a wider range of measures, including comparing and using mixed units and simple equivalents of mixed units (for example, 5m = 500cm). Fractions: • Recognise, find and write fractions of a discrete set of objects. • Recognise that tenths arise from dividing an object into 10 equal parts and in dividing one-digit numbers or quantities by 10

Adding Unit Fractions 2 (Loop Cards)

I love to start one-to-one tutorials/interventions with a loop card activity. They are also excellent when working with small groups or as a starter or plenary for a whole class. To see all the available loop-card topics click 👉 tes.com/…/More Loop Cards….
This particular set of cards allows students to practise adding unit fractions in which one of the denominators MIGHT NOT BE a multiple of the other. Note that the questions have been carefully selected so that they provide good coverage of this sub-topic and also to minimise the opportunities for students to guess answers.
Colour coding: All my loop cards are colour-coded to indicate the approximate level of the questions: KS2 – red and orange KS3/GCSE Foundation – orange and green GCSE Higher – green, blue and purple Further information: In this download there are four sets of similar cards and a student chooses one of the sets and sorts them into order by answering the questions. Then they try to do it faster using a different set, which has the same questions, but a different sort order 😃 My favourite use of loop cards is for two students to have different versions of the cards and race each other. They then check their answers, shuffle, swap packs and race again (quickest overall time wins). More instructions are included in the download. Cut out card size is approx. 65 x 90 mm.
👍If you like this resource, then please rate it and/or leave a comment💬.
