Coordinate Geometry Reasoning Tasks

Coordinate Geometry Reasoning Tasks

Several tasks all based on an Edexcel GCSE question about coordinate geometry - equations of perpendicular lines. These tasks are designed to improve students’ mathematical reasoning and were created as part of the Mathematical Reasoning at GCSE project run by Cambridge Maths Hub. The tasks vary in difficulty, and include work on rearranging equations, distance between points, column vectors, Pythagoras’ theorem, gradient and the equations of straight lines. They are not intended to be used all together; just pick and choose one or two suitable ones for your class. Thanks to JustMaths for the packs of exam questions by topic where I found the original question. Diagram created in Desmos (there is a link to the interactive diagram in the powerpoint). All feedback very welcome. I’d be really interested to hear which tasks you chose and how you used them!

Graph transformations matching activity A2 maths

Graph transformations matching activity A2 maths

Nice team activity, differentiated with some basic transformations, harder transformations and some "extension" transformations. About 30 mins. This is for practicing how transformations affect specific co-ordinates. Match a set of original co-ordinates with the transformation and the image. You or the students will need to cut out the different cards- they are already mixed up on the sheets. answers provided on last two pages.

40 slide Powerpoint Advanced Higher Maths Complex Numbers Argand Diagrams Worked Solutions

40 slide Powerpoint for Advanced Higher Maths Unit 2: Complex Numbers. There is a brief revision of the basics of Complex numbers followed by a series of questions. The 24 questions (many of them multi-part) require the construction of Argand Diagrams, use of the quadratic formula, polynomial long division, and simultaneous equations. There are fully worked solutions (including diagrams) for complex number topics relating to: Equating Real and Imaginary Parts; Finding square, cube, fourth, fifth and sixth roots of complex numbers (including unity) and plotting them on an Argand diagram; Verifying and finding roots of complex number polynomials; Expanding and simplifying complex numbers using the Binomial Theorem and De Moivre’s Theorem; Interpreting geometrically loci in the complex plane; Conversions between polar and rectangular forms; Complex Conjugates; Exponential Form; Trigonometric identities, substitutions and simplification. The questions are grouped in approximate order of difficulty and to match the usual order of progress through this topic. *Animated workings come up line by line on mouse clicks.*

Graph Sketching Discussion Venn Diagram

Students are to think of a graph that would fit in all the regions of the Venn diagram. Three categories are: 1. Graphs with only 1 stationary point 2. Graphs with a maximum 3. Graphs that go through the point (0,1) This is really useful as a discussion activity for where graphs cross the axes and for differentiation. A sample set of answers is included.

Graph Transformation Match cards

Graph Transformation Match cards

This resource enables students to test their understanding of graph transformations. Once printed the individual cards should be cut out. The object of the exercise is to match each function with a description of the transformation and 3 example graphs. The function machine representations are provided to help with understanding (and therefore remembering) the effects of the different transformations. The way I teach this is to get students to think about whether the alteration happens before the function (so effect along the x axis) or whether it happens after (so effect along the y axis) Solutions are provided. This page could be printed and provided as notes if desired.
