Maths Skills Assessment for A-level Physics and Engineering with data analysis tools

Maths Skills Assessment for A-level Physics and Engineering with data analysis tools

This is an assessment of students' Maths skills for the beginning (or during) the A-level Physics course. It assesses students' ability in rearranging equations, prefixes, standard form, graphs, y=mx+c, trig and natural logs. I've used this assessment both as a class test and as homework and it is very useful in identifying not just the students whose Maths skills are weaker but also the specific areas of Maths they are struggling with. The resource includes a Word file of the test itself (which covers 1 1/2 sides of A4), a word file with the answers and an Excel file that can be used to analyse the data from the assessment. The excel file records students marks question-by-question and conditionally formats (RAGs) their marks.

4th & 5th Index Laws

4th & 5th Index Laws

Similar to previous laws this worksheet has 20 questions, The first 3 questions must be completed in full for best results, reminded students not to take a short cut at this early point. If you have used the first 3 worksheets with time limits students will have found the rhythm and be prepared, excited, and eager for more of the same success. Mark quickly and ask “who had only 2 errors? 1 error? All CORRECT?” An Introduction display is included.

Order of Operations Equivalent Expressions Matching Cards

Order of Operations Equivalent Expressions Matching Cards

I created this product to help my students that the order of operations creates equivalent expressions as the student works toward the solution. This product includes three separate sets of cards that students will match on the work page. The set with numbers is the original order of operations expression. The set with letters is the second step in solving the order of operations expression. The set with symbols is an equivalent expression of the second step of working the expression. The equivalent expressions include prime factorization, integer equivalents, and fraction/decimal equivalents. Each set of cards is printed with a different border. If you would like to use only one color of card stock, students will be able to differentiate the sets and match the borders with the borders on the work mat. I prefer to print each set on a different color of card stock so that students can easily see that they must have one card from each color to successfully complete the activity. Once students have matched the cards, they can self-check using a printed copy of the answer key. This activity is also easily used with the Seesaw app. I’ve also included an accountability sheet if you’d like students to record their answers for your review.

Arithmetic/Vocabulary Practice (no Calc)

Arithmetic/Vocabulary Practice (no Calc)

This is one of a series of daily activities used to help my HS/adult students to recall mathematics. My students are told the should know times tables to 16s, squares to 25, cubes to 10, and prime numbers. I avoid using decimals as no calculators are allowed. And undercurrent of the lessons is to teach math clue words/vocabulary for Algebra. My students look forward to these daily. If they are absent they beg for the lessons they missed. The answer sheet is included. I got the original idea from someone on MathShed who used Publisher, I create mine with Excel and the equation editor.
