Check answer to question 2 A lesson on calculating the missing side of a triangle using trigonometry. This lesson was for a Year 10 group who had seen trigonometry before in Year 9. The lesson begins with recapping SOHCAHTOA and asking what we can remember about the topic. We move on to play the Top Gun trailer and discuss how we can use trigonometry to calculate the vertical and horizontal distances travelled by a plane at take off. The worksheet is all Top Gun themed with challenge questions about Maverick and Goose. Plenary is a video from Les Chevaliers du Ciel, before discussing what happened (sonic boom) and calculating (assuming a triangular form) the horizontal distance behind the plane of the impact of the sonic boom. This was a tough crowd to please but they seemed to enjoy it!

A revision activity that can be used for KS3 or foundation GCSE pupils. Can be implemented in lots of ways. I ask pupils to get into pairs, take turns rolling two dice to form a co-ordinate and attempt to solve the corresponding question. Pupil put their initials on problems they have solved and after 30-45 minutes stop and count who has solved the most. Very engaging for year 10 and 11 foundation GCSE pupils. This is a geometry project for you to teach your students. This really fits in with when you are studying geometry. This project is best used as homework as this is how the booklet has been structured. Feel free to edit in any way you want to. Also as some of instructions in the booklet might not fit your teaching schedule you may wish to edit out those parts. This project is designed for Ks3 students in about a middle set. It is a great homework activity and can last for up to 4/5 weeks if extended.Also i have called it a Term 5 Booklet but please edit this so that it fits what term you are doing it in. Operation Bearings - Outdoor bearings activity

This is an adapted activity for practising bearings outdoors. Students are asked to use compasses on their phones to follow instructions on bearings. I had the students dropping a cone at each stage and trailing a piece of string behind them. Following correctly results in an arrow being formed on the ground, this can then lead to questioning like ‘we all started in different places, facing different ways, why are the arrows pointing the same way?’. They can then be extended to write their own instructions or story of bearings to follow. I found the original on a blog but with a photo of the worksheet, I re-wrote it, changed ‘clicks’ to ‘steps’ to work on a smaller scale and added an extension. I used this with a lower set year 9, but could also work with advanced year 7s through to weaker year 10s I think.

Trig-Sta 18 - two nets based on latest World Cup Telstar, with trig reminders as logos

I was so intrigued by Matt Parker on You Tube (Geometry of Footballs) that I thought I would see if I could model the latest World Cup ball, the Telstar 18 - these are the results. You have a one sheet one piece net and a DeLuxe 6 sheet model. The shoe company’s logo that usually adorns these balls is based on a 30-60-90 RAT and so I thought some revision notes on Pythag and Trig might work. I’ve included some design notes on the shoe company’s logo in the ppt. So far in the Platonic League, cubes ruled until 1970 - when the Telstar a truncated icosahedron held sway until Germany 2006 with a dodecahedron, then South Africa 2010 with an octahedron. But the cubes fought back in Brazil and now Russia. Tetrahedron anyone?

A set of 6 simple formula recall tests. Foundation level. With answer slides. Along with these I made sets of cards with 4 questions on to practice using the formulae. I laminated these and let the pupils choose which one to do. Answers to these are also on the Formula Test and Answers files. The Formula Test And Answers notebook file has links to the various answer slides along with links to the original question cards. Question cards A to F are a mix of stuff. Question cards G to J are my first attempt at making some SSDD questions. I’ve been adding to it as I go along, so there may be more to come. I’ve exported the main Formula Test And Answers to pdf for those who don’t have access to Smart notebook - links don’t work on that though. A prompt resource for pupils to use either in class or as homework support showing the formulae triangles. there are 2 files, one with just the formulae triangles, the other with formulae triangles, steps to success (steps to follow when approaching a Trig question) and a prompt for answering worded problems. I provided my students with just the triangles and folded each strip of card concertina style, the extra two cards were added as an after thought as to what would make them better.
