Using Trigonometry and Similar triangles to find the distance of the stars and diameter of the Sun

Using Trigonometry and Similar triangles to find the distance of the stars and diameter of the Sun

A worksheet taking students through the parallax method of finding the distance to stars using SOHCAHTOA trigonometry and then an additional task on using similar triangles to find the diameter of the Sun. Suitable for Y9 classes onwards. The idea inspired by the nice resource from Greenwich Observatory: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/measuring-the-universe-ks4-11198074 - from which I used a couple of pictures. Check out this resource as well for some more ideas.

SOHCAHTOA

SOHCAHTOA

Covers SOHCAHTOA for finding angles and sides in right-angled triangles, as well as trigonometric ratios and their graphs. Plus a GSP file to show the trig ratios changing dynamically.

Trigonometry to find missing angles in a right-angled triangle

Trigonometry to find missing angles in a right-angled triangle

Full lesson powerpoint presentation working through how to find missing angles in a right-angled triangle. It would work well as an introduction to using trig to find missing angles in a right-angled triangle. Examples are worked through and it clearly shows the layout of how to set out an answer. There are fully differentiated worksheets with answers and these include GCSE-style questions. Please review! Feedback would be much appreciated.
