Area and perimeter garden design project

For Year 6, and lower Secondary School Design a garden plan using compound rectilinear shapes. Using formulae, children calculate the area and perimeter of each area of the garden. Using a price list, the children then work out the total cost of the different surfaces they are using. Working to a budget. Great for building methodical working strategies.

Year 4 lesson on co-ordinates done in a fun and engaging way as ‘secret agent co-ordinate training’ with missions for the children to complete, infiltrating a pirate ring to crack a secret code to a treasure chest! I used the lesson for a job interview and was successful with fantastic feedback regarding this lesson! The class were a lower ability Year 4 class but this resource could easily be adapted to fit any ability year 4 class or even a more able year 3. Complete lesson including plan, PowerPoint, worksheets and resources. This is a problem solving activity/worksheet that tests multiple levels of understanding related to the topic of area of regular polygons. They are high-level problems to test the most able, although a hint/formula sheet is included to help “differentiate down”. Also included is a differentiated/scaffolded sheet to help break the questions down, too for lower ability. Overall use of surds, Pythagoras Theorem and area formula for polygons are tested. This resource relates to counting 2D shapes of different colours. It is a 3-in-1 product that covers the early learning of colours, shapes and basic counting up to 10. Each page contains the same shapes but they are different colours. An ideal resource for children to practise colour recognition, 2D shapes and counting. Ideally, each sheet should be laminated and used with a dry-erase pen. Children count the shapes that are the same colour and then write the number in the space provided. Shapes used are: circle, square, triangle, rectangle, diamond/rhombus and pentagon. <strong>Extension opportunity:</strong> Some children can count beyond 10 and even 20 in Reception and Year 1, so once they have written down the number of shapes that are the same colours, they can then add the two numbers together to find the total number of, e.g., squares. A complete lesson on area of rectilinear shapes, with a strong problem solving and creative element. Activities included: Starter: See cover slide - a prompt to think about properties of shapes, in part to lead to a definition of rectilinear polygons. Main: A question for pupils to discuss, considering which of two methods gives the correct answer for the area of an L-shape. A worksheet showing another L-shape, 6 times with 6 different sums. Pupils try to figure out the method used from the sum. A second worksheet that is really hard to describe but involves pupils thinking critically about how the area of increasingly intricate rectilinear shapes can have the same area. This sets pupils up to go on to create their own interesting shapes with the same area, by generalising about the necessary conditions for this to happen, and ways to achieve this (without counting all the squares!) A third worksheet with more conventional area questions, that could be used as a low-stakes test or a homework. Most questions have the potential to be done in more than one way, so could also be used to get pupils discussing and comparing methods. Plenary: A final question of sorts, where pupils have to identify the information sufficient to work out the area of a given rectilinear shape. Printable worksheets and answers included. Roll-a-topic GCSE foundation Geometry Revision

A revision activity that can be used for KS3 or foundation GCSE pupils. Can be implemented in lots of ways. I ask pupils to get into pairs, take turns rolling two dice to form a co-ordinate and attempt to solve the corresponding question. Pupil put their initials on problems they have solved and after 30-45 minutes stop and count who has solved the most. Very engaging for year 10 and 11 foundation GCSE pupils.
