Magnets are magic! A primary science CLIL / ESL lesson plan on magnetism

Key information: • Teaching science in English at A1 to A2 level • 45-minute lesson • Student's handout + Teacher's notes • English language support for both teacher and students Rationale: In this lesson, learners read about magnets, steel and iron, then do an experiment to explore and verify basic scientific facts. Through predicting, experimenting, observing and stating observations, learners experience and develop understanding of scientific processes and methods while also expanding their scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding. The lesson encourages learners to become interested in and curious about science concepts while developing their thinking and language skills. Content objectives: To experiment with and observe the force of a magnet on objects which do and don’t contain iron; to predict and confirm predictions about which objects a magnet will attract; to understand that magnets attract iron. Language objectives: To use simple present tense to express scientific facts; to use simple future tense to make predictions; to use 'contains'/'doesn’t contain' to describe the characteristics of an object. These lessons have been designed to support teachers’ and learners’ use of English in the following contexts: • bilingual education • Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) • English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) • Content-Based Instruction (CBI) • English as a Second Language (ESL) • English as a Foreign Language (EFL).
