THE MURRAY DARLING BASIN PART 3 - WATER PLANNING FOR THE PRESENT AND THE FUTURE

THE MURRAY DARLING BASIN PART 3 - WATER PLANNING FOR THE PRESENT AND THE FUTURE

This final unit on the Murray-Darling Basin deals with the issue of water allocations throughout the Basin. The role of the Murray Darling Basin Authority is to produce ,among other areas of focus, a plan for the distribution of water across the large Basin and across 4 states and the Australian Capital Territory. You will encounter controversies and differing levels of acceptance to issues of water sharing and the provision of environmental flows. This unit will support studies on inland water systems and basins; river studies; agricultural studies of irrigation/ crop raising/salinity issues; environmental studies; and locational studies dealing with Australia. This unit indicates the cross-state issues of top-end users and lower-end users of water, The 4 scenarios are included to show why there are differing viewpoints on levels of water extraction and environmental needs. Take your students into the Basin. Wade in the wetlands with Wade. Recognise why people along the Balonne River in Queensland are not happy about water quotas. Take the first boat cruise through the Goolwa barrage after the low water levels of the Murray River in 2008 and understand why fresh water flows are significant needs for the mouth of the river and the Coorong. Sympathise with the orange grower of Loxton as he cuts down perfectly good orange trees on part of his orchard area. There are several useful attachments in colour and black and white to assist and a summary test sheet. To cover all the issues you will need several lessons. This is a sizable and important area of Australia. It can link with earlier units on River studies and the series on the Coorong. Screen the pages for class discussion. Distribute the attachment pages for individual in class or homework use. Use the last page test to check the effectiveness of learning.

THE MURRAY DARLING BASIN OF AUSTRALIA - PART 2 -WATER RESOURCES AND LAND USES

THE MURRAY DARLING BASIN OF AUSTRALIA - PART 2 -WATER RESOURCES AND LAND USES

This is the second unit in the series on the Murray-Darling Basin. It begins with maps indicating the size and variations of climate and landscapes. This is a major agricultural region of Australia though which a network of rivers flow into the major drainage systems of the Darling River (Northern Basin) and the Murray River (Southern Basin). This unit fits into studies of Inland water Basins; River studies; Agricultural studies; History of pre-colonial presence of Aboriginal people; colonial; history; water management systems; river flow modification and diversion ---in fact the more you encounter information the broader the study possibilities become. The pages are designed for classroom projection and discussion. The attachments are provided to give you the opportunity of providing copies (black and white/colour choice) for individual student use. This unit also touches on material covered in Coorong Studies of South Australia and River Realities of South Australia. Take your students into the Murray-Darling Basin by way of maps, data and photographs. There is a range of environments to encounter. The role of water - its availability, variability and quality is the resource foundation that will be the focus of Part 3 in this series.

Te Reo Maori Words that Every Kiwi Should Know

Te Reo Maori Words that Every Kiwi Should Know

This fun and engaging game helps to reinforce and introduces students to the Maori language. The games shuffle ability assures that no two games are ever the same which means you can use the same resource multiple times. I typically put the class into small groups and ask a member of the group to choose a color and number. That is the question that they have to answer. If correct they get one point. Then I move to the next group. Alternatively the whole class answers and then we tally up the points to get a winner. I run it on an interactive whiteboard but would be equally successful on a projector, computer or TV screen. Alternatively it could be run for an individual student on their own device. When you start the game press the shuffle button to randomize the questions ensuring that no game is ever the same. This means that this Jeopardy game can be used multiple times with the one class as it is different every time. This is a PowerPoint Macro Show. To run the game double click the file and make sure you say "yes" to running macros. If you do not the questions will not shuffle correctly. I have tested on a PC but it should work on other devices. If this is your first time with Macros let me know by personal message and I am happy to answer all your questions. Enjoy
