Fractions, decimals and percentages: visual representations using fraction bars down to 1/100.
This resource is based on 100 squares and how they can be divided into fractions, decimals and percentages. It contains:
• A sequence of PowerPoint slides introducing fractions, decimals and percentages
• Worksheets for the activities not usually readily available in text books.
• A blank, copiable, fraction-bar sheet (located at the end of the PowerPoint.
This resource is designed to allow learners to visualise the various concepts that arise in this topic. It is meant to complement the exercises found in most text books. The students I work with tend to need more detailed explanations, as textbooks often assume prior knowledge to which some EAL (and other) students have not had access.

I found it difficult to locate a fraction-bar resource that depicted hundredths; the versions of MS Word I tried did not allow me to make divisions that small. This made it difficult to teach the whole topic from the one resource; I needed to do this for consistency, so that students could more easily see the relationships and links between the three ways to express parts of a whole number. My solution was to do one by hand and build from that on each slide.
This is suitable for:
• EAL students
• Late arrivals
• Students with SEN may also find it accessible
