Matching animals to their habitat

Matching animals to their habitat

This lesson is suitable for children in KS1 and lower KS2. It is part of a wider unit about London Zoo and is an ideal preparatory lesson for a trip there. It can also be used as a Science lesson as part of the Living Things and their Habitats programme of study. The animals have escaped at the zoo and the keeper needs your help! The colourful presentation first encourages children to describe the features of animals. A group activity then challenges children to match animals to their names, description and habitat. It includes a variety of animals including fish, birds, mammals, insects and amphibians. In the activity, children match animals to their description and habitat. It is differentiated three ways: LA - Children just match animals to their habitats. MA -Children match animals to their description and habitat. UA - Children fill in the names of the animals and match them to their description and habitat. Finally, an extension activity challenges children to classify animals as fish, birds, mammals, insects or amphibians. If you like this resource, please review it! If you have any suggestions or feedback, contact me at eddiebray@yahoo.co.uk. I am also looking for teachers to test new resources – please get in touch if you would like to help.

Classifying African animals

Classifying African animals

This powerpoint gives a general background about animal species in the world, has an example of a classification of an animal. then looks at how we classify them - plants and animals vertebrates and invertebrates - this then branches off into the 5 main vetebrate and what makes them a mammal, fish, bird, reptile or amphibian. Then it branches off the invetebrate into arachnid, molluscs and insects and what makes them these things. A classification chart (vertebrates) is at the end and i would give them this to copy into their books to create their own classification key. As a challenge i would get them to add in more questions to seperate the animals further. The animsla i have included are african animals as that is our topic but could easily be swapped for other animals and it would still work

Classification: Organism Grouping Read and Apply

Classification: Organism Grouping Read and Apply

Heterotrophs/Autotrophs, Vertebrates/Invertebrates, Prokaryotes/Eukaryotes, and Vascular/Nonvascular Plants are all major groups of organisms that scientists classify. Many students these days have a terribly difficult time comprehending nonfiction & informational text - textbooks, websites, articles etc. This product offers a more simple option for students to read, apply, and comprehend what they read - This is a GREAT tool to help your students overcome the obstacle of comprehending science text. These “Read & Apply” products are designed to cover ONE basic science topic per lesson for students to build a solid foundation before moving to the next topic & building that “house of knowledge” on the foundation. This product contains: Reading Comprehension Tips 1 short reading passage 1 application activity 1 writing prompt that goes along with the passage A magnified version of the reading passage to show on a document camera Photo example/answer key Each reading passage is simple & not overwhelmingly long like textbooks are. Students can listen to you read, read silently, in partners, or in small groups highlighting important words and concepts as they go. The students then apply what they read with an activity & responding to a writing prompt. Don’t use interactive notebooks??? Just use colored paper!! Glue the passage to one side and have the students do the interactive activity on the other! Can easily be 3-hole punched to put in a binder, hung on the wall, or slide into a folder!! This product would best fit with 4th-6th graders, but would be GREAT for a 7-8 grade remediation reading class or special ed! Would also be a great option for differentiation if you have just a few students in your class that are having a difficult time with their grade level text that you already use.
