Interpreting Regression Graphs

Interpreting Regression Graphs

Seven examples of regression graphs are given with lines of best fit added. Examples of positive, negative and linear approximation relationships are used. Students are asked to state the correlation then estimate and interpret the intercept and gradient of each graph. The students need to know how to estimate the gradient from 2-points on the line and find the intercept by extrapolation. The task is presented in two forms (1) a write on worksheet and (2) a cut up , mix and match activity. The second option is designed to encourage group work and discussion. There is a set of extension questions, one for each graph that promote further consideration on the strengths and limitations of lines of best fit. Answers are provided in a separate file. The activity is designed to be used with AS Mathematics students however it is accessible to Higher Tier GCSE Mathematics and GCSE Statistics students.

Linear Modeling Projects! (CCSS.HSF.LE.A.1)

This class project is sure to be a hit with any and all of your students! This bundle includes 3 projects in one. All the projects relate around the same idea. Students have been hired as consultants for the Baltimore Ravens, Real Madrid or Monsters University to solve some problems. Students must use the provided data to create a linear regression (line of best fit, least squares equation) in order to determine a correlation coefficient. Afterwards, students identify residuals for each piece of data. After collecting all the necessary information, students are led through questions related to the organization. When I did this in class I gave all three projects and let them choose. The choices were mixed and the students loved that they were able to individualize the days lesson depending on their interests. After students were finished each group received a reporting form. This is the form the "consultants" would hand their employer to summarize their findings. This was absolutely a hit in our class! If you don't want all three I will put each project up individually. Simulate and compare time series in a spreadsheet

A spread sheet with which students can simulate and graph time 3 different time series (with different seasonal effects, linear trends, exponential trends and random variance) by setting a few parameters. Besides helping the students to get an intuitive feeling for what the different components imply in practice, it can serve as an introduction to the idea of estimation by letting visually replicate a real world time series. A handout is included together with data on the sales of sunglasses which the students can try to replicate in the spread sheet.
