You will also find an oral presentation project to get the students to acquire additional knowledge about the U.S. Civil Rights Movement. This way the movie becomes an excellent pre-activity to a broader learning opportunity for students. Note: My personal way of using the oral presentation project is that I get students in pairs to work on the project and present to the rest of the class. I ask students to take notes because afterwards I give them a quiz on everything which was presented… not necessarily for a final “official” grade but a final “unofficial” assessment of who has acquired the most knowledge… students love the challenge of trying to beat their classmates and no stress about it showing up on their report card… I usually give a few bonus points to my first three pairs who got the most correct answers on the final quiz.

Poetry Comparison: J Cole and Tupac

Poetry Comparison: J Cole and Tupac

A lesson teaching students how to compare poetry. I'm all about trying to make learning relatable to my students and for them not just to learn about poets they cannot connect with. This is why I have decided to use J Cole ("Change") and Tupac's ("Changes") songs for this lesson. Students will: -begin with a general overview of what it means to compare -Work in groups to unpick the songs using TSLAP (Questions are given to help aid students analysis of the songs) -Identify the similarities and differences between the songs -Class discussion -Complete a comparison essay (sentence starters provided and comparison flashcard) My Youtube video on how to analyse a poem using TSLAP is also included. This could be set as a homework task before the lesson so students already have a secure understanding of how to analyse a poem.
