European Day of Languages

Thursday 26th September 2024 is the European Day of Languages! This is an assembly that has been prepared to let children know this, and to encourage them to reflect on why there is a special day for languages. It would work well as an introduction to a whole day of European language themed small activities e.g. the lunch menu in other languages/teachers greeting you in other languages. There are opportunities to iterate to children that, even though we are leaving the EU, we are part of Europe, and will still be part of Europe when we leave (Not overtly mentioned - this could be held as a discussion on the ‘Europe’ slides.) It links to what I have called in the presentation ‘British Values’ (but for my school we talk of Core Values) and prompts children to reflect on how learning about another person’s language and culture can link to values such as tolerance. There are links to a clip, where children have to listen for the French speaker saying ‘hello- talk to me’ - as we teach French in our school (simply amend the photo and listen for the language(s) that you teach if it is not French). Later on there are some fun activities, in French, which are appropriate if you do or do not teach French, as ideally, throughout the school day, you would incorporate ways to engage with the other languages spoken in Europe (e.g. am register in Italian, pm register in Spanish - I have chosen French as we teach it in our school and it needs a ‘push/plug’. The material is designed to fill approximately 20 minutes assembly time. If I had more time to fill, I would show one of the excellent French language short animations afterwards, such as Du Tout Cuit I hope you find this resource helpful.

Cross-curricular starter activities for European Day of Languages

I have created 5 minute starter activities for a range of subjects across the curriculum in order to celebrate European Day of Languages. Each starter activity links that particular subject with languages. Each starter either involves a quick activity such as a match up task or it is a “did you know?” style information slide linking the subject to languages. The PowerPoint slides indicate which subject they refer to in the top left hand corner and there are instructions/answers underneath each slide. The idea is to make the activity as accessible and as easy as possible for other staff members to use so that they are inclined to include them in their lessons. I have sent the PowerPoint to all teaching staff in the hope that they will use them in order to support the languages department in celebrating the European Day of Languages. If successful then it will mean that the students have some exposure to language learning in all of their lessons throughout the day. The subjects that I have included are: Maths (x2) English (x3) Science (x2) Languages (x2) Geography (x2) History Religious Studies Physical Education (x2) Food Technology Textiles Technology Media Studies Drama (x2) Art Psychology (x2) Health and Social Care Business Studies Music Law Government & Politics Computing

FOLLOWING FEEDBACK, VIDEO LINKS ARE NOW ADDED TO THE SLIDES FOOTNOTES. First time posting but I hope you trust the description and download, I believe this will help you. This PPt is worth 30mins of Assembly time. Last year I enlisted my language leaders to help me deliver the slides, one each on repeat. This helps the students to overcome stage fright and improve public speaking. All you will need to do is to introduce the Assembly and manage/trust your language leaders to deliver the rest. This PPt is great for your European day of Languages Assembly with footnotes with instructions for every slide. Your audience will be engaged and it will participate answering some multiple choice questions - students could be rewarded with positive points or a sweet on the spot, if the answer the question correctly. Besides engaging your audience with questions, you will provide them with interesting facts and there are also links to videos thought the ppt that will explain how languages shape our thoughts and will keep your audience attentive and engaged until the end, hopefully encouraging students to take a language for their choice of GCSE.
