Complete KS3 SOW - Adventurers and Explorers

(0)
This SOW is a fun way to introduce non-fiction reading to students with little experience of it. It uses extracts from non-fiction travel writing from explorers from a diverse background and uses places from across the world to teach reading and writing skills. Loosely following Nellie Bly’s trip around the world in 72 days, this scheme of work should: encourage students to engage with a global perspective on literature; allow students to engage with explorers from diverse backgrounds; teach students valuable reading and writing skills. It also has a homework scheme attached that builds up to presentations at the end. Lessons 1-15: Non-fiction reading building up inference skills. Lessons 16-28: Travel writing with description. Lessons 29-32: Preparation for End of Year Assessment. Extract Booklet is available for free here: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/adventurers-and-explorers-extract-booklet-12227816

Text-Based Adventure Games in Python

(1)
After doing “Hello World!” one of the first tasks set by many old school programmers is designing a classic text-based adventure game. Here is a six-lesson scheme of work to allow students to explore this idea and design their own game in Python. This can easily be modified to another programming language if you want (but the example files are in Python).

Explorers and Adventurers Flashcards Large and Small

(0)
36 pages of flashcards related to the theme of explorers and adventurers. Each flashcard has a colour large card and small matching card. Flashcards show things that an explorer or adventurer may take with them on their travels such as a compass, map, pair of boots and tent. Flashcards also show activities such as walking, hiking, climbing and fishing. The flashcards have a number of uses including speaking and listening, matching, reading, adding to displays and visual aids. Cut and laminate and then the flashcards will be available for reuse. A nice activity is to have a case or rucksack (real or a paper outline). Children can decide where they are going on their travels and pack what they need.

Adventure and Exploration Scheme of Work

(5)
This is a fully resourced scheme of work adapting resources from variety of freely shared sources. The majority of resources were adapted from AllyUganda's fantastic Adventure and Exploration SoW - https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/sow-geography-and-adventure-6434814 I am sharing these lessons and resources to help others with their planning. Learning Matrix - I currently use these to record student progress over the term. Students put them in the front of their books and the criteria is highlighted yellow as they achieve it. If I'd like them to try and do a particular criteria it is highlighted pink, once achieved it is ticked off. Set 1 completed the SoW as a project, they used the learning matrix as a guide and provided feedback to one another at the end of the term using the project feedback sheet.

Exploring Emotions Adventure - Wellbeing & PSHE complete resource

This adventure focuses on exploring our emotions. The adventure takes children on a learning journey through reading comprehension, story telling, writing, phonics, maths and art skills with a focus on Emotional Literacy. Children will have the opportunity to identify emotions through the story and in their own lives and learn skills to regulate their feelings when they need to. It is a wonderful resource designed to accompany the picture book Conker the Chameleon by Hannah Peckham and Stephanie Jayne. I recommend using this resource alongside a copy of Conker the Chameleon. All our adventures develop children’s wellbeing and are based on positive psychology research and interventions. Your learners will love the science activity inspired by the story. This guide is designed for children aged 4-12 to be done with adult support. Further information and support is available for adults in our blog at www.hellohappylearner.com. It is great for use in class, at home or in interventions. This is a great resource for World Book Day & wellbeing.

Exploration and Adventure Need to Know Learning Matrix

(0)
Need to Know Learning Matrix I use these to assess student understanding and progress through the term and to provide quality feedback without the need for excessive comment writing. I simply put the matrix in the front of the students book, every time I mark their books I highlight the relevant criteria in one colour (usually yellow) and criteria I would like them to attempt in DIRT in another (usually pink). Once the criteria to attempt is achieved I simply tick it off on the matrix. In their books I will write WWW and list the codes for the criteria achieved. I will then draw steps to indicate how to level up and write the corresponding codes of criteria I want them to attempt. The Need to Know questions are based on the lessons & learning objectives over the term, which are also used to create the coded success criteria. I find this technique reduces the time I spend marking books however allows me to provide quality feedback and to clearly see progress over the term. It's great for outline the SoW and encouraging independent learning. Hope it's of use.

GCSE Spanish Revision Aztec Adventure

A series of 11 tasks based around the planning of a trip to Mexico to explore a spooky Aztec temple where a Mexican researcher recently went missing. Each task focuses on a different topic and students must work together to escape the temple in time! Pack includes: * Lesson plan/running order * Eleven activities, each focusing on a different topic: * Some images for use as posters/promotional materials Topics covered: * Directions and places in the town * Food and drink * Shopping * Personal information and family * Hobbies * Daily routine * School * Health * Holidays * Jobs * The environment This activity was originally designed to be used as a fun way of revising some key GCSE vocabulary during an Easter School revision session. It can last up to a few hours. Can be used as an after school session or over the course of a week during lesson time. We were lucky enough to have access to a library with a large basement beneath it and students split into two groups and communicated using walkie-talkies provided by the school. This added to the drama — we had a drama student teacher dressed up as a monster and the students in the basement used torches to navigate from task to task, trying to complete activities within a given time or risk one member of the team being ‘caught’ by the monster and given a short time out. It can be easily adapted to work within a classroom, with the ‘research’ group sitting around a table with dictionaries, ready to assist the group completing the tasks.

This resource includes an electronic set of plans for parents for English and Literacy in Year 6. (Reception guidance for Literacy is also available, though in a slightly different format). All the plans use text extracts freely downloadable from LoveReading4Kids, Oxford Owl or websites with free audio recordings. Week 8 topic for Year 6: Explorers and Adventurers. An editable example of how this might look is also included. A message from our Senior English Consultant Nicola Martin: HOT OFF THE PRESS! Lancashire Primary English and Literacy team Home Learning Read and Respond Units Summer 2 overview - Available now! Due to popular demand, the Primary English and Literacy team have created a second overview of units to support schools, teachers, parents and children. This follows on from an overview produced for Summer 1 including 6 weeks of plans for Reception to Y6. You may not have used the full suite yet due to this being a 5 week half term! The Summer 2 overview includes 4 weeks of plans from Reception to Y6 which can be used at home or in school. As in previous weeks, an example letter is included which teachers can send to parents in order to provide additional guidance, or to tailor the units to particular classes. Many schools have been enhancing the units in the following ways: -Providing word banks to support each day or week -Teachers reading aloud some of the stories, poems and texts and sending via an online platform/school website so the children can ‘see and hear’ them -Designing additional activities linked to the suggested texts to make links across the curriculum We hope the units continue to be useful and please share any feedback on our Facebook page….
