I taught this lesson to strengthen my year 6’s confidence in their place value and to help them answer the questions in the SATs arithmetic like 6-4.56 or 7-4.569. We discussed that, by the end of the lessons, some of them might be more confident to answer the question using a number line and some might be more confident to use the formal written method but that they should all be able to have the option.
There are lots of opportunities for modelling and lots of differentiated practice questions (with the answers). At the end, I have included a slide that is a printable worksheet or get your pupils to work from the board to save paper. I always display the LO and Challenge question while they’re working independently so they can complete this when they’ve finished.
The final slide is the answers to save valuable teacher time!
