July 1 2016 marks the centenary of the start of the Battle of the Somme and coincides with the Euro 2016 tournament, also in France. Many British footballers volunteered to fight, most famously the men of the Footballers’ Battalion. By combining an important historic anniversary with a major football tournament, we hope to inspire pupils to read and write for enjoyment and to engage them with studying, and enjoying, history.

In this toolkit you will find football and First World War related activities designed for pupils aged seven to 13. These activities can be run in class, in assemblies and in the library and there are also ideas for engaging parents and running your own book groups - plus the opportunity to host your own match day party! During the first three weeks of Euro 2016 we will also be publishing an original children’s story in 16 chapters to be read aloud in schools and homes. www.literacytrust.org.uk/euro-2016

Amazing resource! Can't wait to do this after half term when motivating my boys will be hard work! Loved the first chapter of Tom Palmer's Euro 2016 book. Will definitely be logging in every day for each new chapter. Useful links to downloadable Euro 2016 wordsearches, bingo and parents letters. Brilliant! Thank you!
