The Point One Learning Reading Fluency Pathway is a structured intervention designed for pupils who need additional support to become fluent, confident readers.
The pathway offers four carefully sequenced starting points, allowing teachers to match pupils to the level that best meets their current reading needs. Children at different levels of reading fluency can engage with the same history content while working on their fluency needs.
This complete Romans pathway contains:
✔ Starter Step: Short sentences, mostly single clause with mostly one and two syllable words.
✔ Step 1: Mostly co-ordinating conjunctions with some light subordination and fronted adverbials. Includes explicit work on changing intonation depending on the end punctuation.
✔ Step 2: Sentences start to hold more than one idea and start to use a wider range of subordinate conjunctions. By the end of the intervention, children have progressed to reading sentences that start with a subordinate clause.
✔ Step 3: More sophisticated subordination and more than one conjunction. By the end of the unit, children have progressed to reading sentences with embedded relative clauses and parentheses.
Together these provide 6 weeks of fully planned intervention lessons for each Step with 3 x 15 minute sessions per week.
The pathway develops:
✔ reading accuracy
✔ phrasing and expression
✔ vocabulary
✔ sentence understanding
✔ reading confidence
while building background knowledge through National Curriculum history content.
The 5–Point Fluency Routine carefully develops fluency skills over 3 sessions.
Decode It : Children learn to break words into syllables to help them decode
**Phrase It: **Echo reading helps children improve phrasing, intonation, expression and when to pause
Extend It: Children build syntactic understanding, gradually extending sentences so they read with fluency and understanding
**Build It: **Children deepen their syntactic understanding alongside their fluency (and sentence building skills) by forming their own sentences based on the structural focus of the passage.
**Perform It: **Children perform their best, fluent reading applying the skills learned that week.
Every step includes:
✔ Pre and post assessment
✔ Six fully planned teaching PowerPoints that guide the teacher through the lessons
✔ Printable pupil pack
✔ Adult guidance
✔ Games and practice activities
