Lessons from History
POSTnotes/POSTreports are intended to give UK Members of Parliament an overview of issues based on the evidence available to government and were compiled by the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology and then the ESRC. This four page POSTnote, from January 2009, considers how evidence from history could contribute to policy-making. It is argued that there are a number of ways in which this could be beneficial, and these are presented under the headings of: Historical Analogies; New Perspectives on Current Policy Problems; Challenging Assumptions and Correcting Misconceptions; Evaluation of Policy Outcomes; Policy Implementation; and Limitations of History.
