Prior to teaching, I was a Behaviorist for five years. I strongly believe in the positive reinforcement approach when it comes to classroom management. For the past couple of years, I have used stuffed animals in my classroom as a management tool. The students think that they are being watched by the stuffed animal. Every morning, there are notes that are mysteriously left on my desk on who did an outstanding job the day before. Whomever received a note will receive a ticket from me, which can be cashed in for prizes. This concept is similar to "The Elf on the Shelf". However, with my story, you can use any stuffed animal that you may already have and plug that type of animal where the blanks are, e.g. bear, giraffe. The students are always eager to see who receives a note from their teacher's friend. They also really enjoy naming their teacher's friend as a class. Attached is a lesson plan, notes, examples of rewards, and the short rhyming story that introduces your friend.
